Members of the Rotary Club of Avon-Canton dined together on June 11 to celebrate the incoming 2010 - 2011 President, Phil Worley. 77 members, spouses and guests enjoyed the evening events at La Trattoria restaurant in Canton. In addition to Phil the full roster of club officials also include Mike Sherber - President Elect, Ann Clark - Sergeant-at-Arms, Gary Hyde - Treasurer, Mark Steier, Secretary, Kay Kellogg - Member-at-large, Dale Bronson, - Member-at-large, Josh Gillooly - Past President
The second item on the evenings agenda was the awarding of the coveted "Paul Harris Fellow" awards for community service, named after the founder of Rotary International. This year's award winners are Phil Worley, Steve Harris and Peter Vignati.

Members of the local Rotary Club came together on June 12 and 13 to make the existing Shelter located on Thompson Road handicap accessible. The Club had built the shelter in 2005 and now realized that there was a great need to make it accessible. We realized that a great number of people with disabilities were enjoying the use of the Rails-to-Trails pathway, and were not able to access the shelter in inclement weather.

The Rotary Club of Avon-Canton sent 4 Shelterbox units to Haiti to add to 10,000 on the ground as of two weeks ago and are committed to another 5000 to be sent by sent by Rotary International.
Each Shelterbox contains a tent that can hold 10 people, cooking utensils, water purification tablets for 6 months, medical supplies and much more.

Haiti is the most impoverished country in the Western Hemisphere and one of the poorest in the world. About half of the country's 9.5MM people do not have access to clean water. Bio-sand filters used alone or in conjunction with pre or post treatments remove water borne pathogens, particulates, organic and inorganic toxins to purify the water. Approximately 200,000 of these bio-sand filters have been installed worldwide and a production facility to manufacture these units in Haiti has been established.
