Meeting of May 15, 2013
by Edward Miller

From The Top

President Kathy opened the meeting with the pledge led by Ann Marie Bode, and grace by Gus Fishel.  Since today was  our 54th Annual Ferdinand Gutmann Scholarship Awards Luncheon, we were joined by many guests - parents, teachers, advisors and other important people in the lives of the scholarship winners.
Kathy welcomed all of the scholarship recipients, and the many guests who came to congratulate them, and introduced John Van Bourgondien, Scholarship Committee Chairman, who conducted today's program.

Today's Program

For the past 54 years the Babylon Rotary Club has provided college scholarships to deserving students from local high schools at our Annual Ferdinand Gutmann Memorial Awards Luncheon.  The Babylon Rotary Scholarship Program was founded by Ferdinand Gutmann, a unique Rotarian of great personal, moral courage, who was devoted to the encouragement and advancement of young people,  worldwide goodwill and peace.

From the description of the academic and career goals provided by each scholarship winner, it was clear that the Scholarship Committee again chose wisely and well - this is a truly outstanding group of youngsters.

John Van Bourgondien introduced this year's recipients, each of whom gave a brief talk on their college plans and career aspirations; they are :

Babylon High School                                 Colleen McKeown &  Olivia Smith

North Babylon High School                         Rachael Shaw & Tabasum Saljooki

West Babylon High School                           Debra-Anne Dingwerth & Sarah Bosworth

West Islip High School                                Samantha Wolmacher & Mary Haedrich

St. John The Baptist High School                 Alexander Smith & Vanessa Nguyen

Photos of those scholars present at the awards ceremony are in the Photo Album section on the home page of the Babylon Rotary web site.

Next Week's Program

At our regular meeting next Wednesday, May 22nd, we'll hear from Brittany Aubin about the Global Poverty Project.
