We each then staffed a station, working as a team until we had packed 20,000 meals for children overseas.  This is a worldwide project, and Rotary is their biggest international partner. The Renaissance of Traditional Chinese Culture
by Ennis, Donn

Image

President Kathleen presenting 100 Polio Vaccinations Certificate given in Dr. Ye's Honor.

Our speaker today was Dr. Michael Ye.  He discussed the renaissance of traditional Chinese culture.  As more Chinese realize the importance of their traditional values, they have been working together to bring about a renaissance of the traditional culture. Shen Yun (meaning “The beauty of divine beings dancing”) is a manifestation of such “renaissance.” Shen Yun Performing Arts brings to life the deep inner meaning of man’s awakening to the Tao.

Shen Yun Performing Arts is a nonprofit organization. Established in New York in 2006, its mission is to revive China’s 5,000 years of civilization and bridge the gap between East and West. Through the universal language of music and dance, Shen Yun weaves a wondrous tapestry of heavenly realms, ancient legends, and modern heroic tales, taking you on a journey through 5,000 years of Chinese culture. Its stunning beauty and tremendous energy leave audiences uplifted and inspired. A Shen Yun performance features the world’s foremost classically trained dancers, a unique orchestra blending East and West, and dazzling animated backdrops — together creating one spectacular performance.

The Two Bit Circus
by Ennis, Donn

Image

Rotarian Les Silverman, Brent Bushnell from Two Bit Circus and President Kathleen.

Another fantastic program. The carnival reimagined with robots, fire, and lasers to inspire young inventors in science, technology, engineering, art, and math. (STEAM)  "You've heard of STEM... but we agree with John Maeda of RISD and MIT that Science, Technology, Engineering, and Math aren't complete without Art.  Our culture isn't doing enough to get kids interested in STEAM. As professional inventors, we rely on these disciplines every day, and want to share our excitement about them with kids young and old. Through years of building and demonstrating fun games we've learned no better way to get kids into STEAM than to show them an amazing time.  When you say 'engineering' to most kids they zone out.  But when you say 'lasers, robots, and fire,' you have their undivided attention."  A great event coming to Los Angeles in April.

Franky Carrillo was our Speaker this Morning.
by Ennis, Donn

Our speaker today had a real "Thanksgiving" story to tell.

At the age of 16, Francisco "Franky" Carrillo was convicted of the 1991 shooting murder of a Lynwood man. His conviction was reversed by the Los Angeles County Superior Court  on March 14, 2011 after he had served twenty years in prison.

His conviction relied on eyewitness testimony from six people. The witnesses later admitted they had been influenced by police officers, and each other, to identify Carrillo. Two men later confessed to the crime, and stated Carrillo was not involved.

Although always protesting his innocence, Carrillo was found guilty at his initial trial and subsequent appeals. After Carrillo's case was taken on by the Northern California Innocence Project, he was able to conclusively prove his innocence.

25 Year MB Rotary Veteran Defines What a True Rotarian is All About
by Samuels, Russ

Past MB Rotary President Jay Harkenrider is a 25 Year MB Rotary Veteran who defines what a true Rotarian is all about.ImageImage

Jay was born in Phoenix, one of 9 brothers and sisters. He moved to Hermosa Beach when he was 8 years old and quickly forgot the desert and welcomed the beach. He attended Mira Costa High School where he met and fell in love with Susan and after 40 years of marriage, they still refer to themselves as High School sweethearts. Their two children

(Jessica and Steven) have given them 5 grandchildren, and numerous football and soccer games every weekend.

Jay went to work with his father-in-law, Bill Riddle, at Riddle & Ross Realtors 30 years ago and has been active in all aspects of residential and commercial buying, selling and developing. His employer this year will celebrate 50 years in business in Manhattan Beach. For fun, Jay enjoys cycling, motorcycling and surfing.

In his other life (pre-real estate), Jay drove an 18-wheeler hauling pro- duce from California to the East Coast and, when that got old, he began hauling lumber out of the LA and Long Beach harbors. The lumber industry provided him valuable training in construction, which he later used in his company’s development of apartments and homes.

Jay joined our Rotary Club in 1988, sponsored by John Rhind and Dave Hornbecker, when the Club had about 25 members. Jay jumped right into the Club’s activities and in 3 short years became President in 1991-92, in part because all the other members had already served

as President. Under Jay, the Club for the first time, submitted to the District in writing their achievements, which was enough for our Club to receive the award of Best Club for Medium-sized Clubs.

During his first year in Rotary, Jay became the International Service Di- rector, since this position was unfilled for several years. He heard about a District project where Korean children were brought to the U.S. for repair of congenital heart defects, so he had the Club contribute $2000 to help fly these children into LAX, meet them at the airport, visit them at the hospital, drive them to Disneyland and take them back to the airport. Jay considers watching these kids go from very sick to very healthy one of his most memorable “Rotary Moments.” He relates to how impressed he was to see Rotary in action and he became hooked on Rotary.

Jay was also our liaison to the Interact Club at Mira Costa for many years and helped grow that Club into a vibrant organization, which has transformed hundreds of young teens into service-minded adults.

Jay is truly a fabulous Rotarian. His enthusiasm and dedication to the ideals of Rotary and our Club have been remarkable and is a main reason our Club is so strong and outstanding. We salute you Jay!!
