Last week's program
by Ken Eastman

Last week, coinciding with our celebration of Veterans Day, Jeff Gorell, a third-generation Navy officer, gave us some interesting insights on the "Day of Infamy" Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor. He told us that Japan got the idea from the Battle of Taranto (November 1940), where British planes successfully attacked Italian battleships with torpedoes.

Jeff said that Japan's original idea for Pearl Harbor was to have their ships launch the planes and leave immediately; after the attack, the pilots would ditch in the ocean and be rescued by submarines.

For all of its destruction, Jeff added, the attack may have been more of a failure than a success, since key targets such as the Navy's ship repair yard, submarine base, etc. were untouched.

Jeff told us that one of the real tragedies of Pearl Harbor is that so few of today's young people know anything about it.
Things for the troops
by Ken Eastman

Don't forget to bring your gifts for the troops to our meeting this week (or next). Phyllis needs to get the packages in the mail before Thanksgiving. And don't forget, you can also donate cash (or have a donation billed to your club account) and Phyllis will take care of purchasing the items.
The RAIN tree
by Ken Eastman

Last week, Jay Berger unveiled the RAIN Project holiday gift tree, which is decorated with wishes (needs). If you haven't picked an envelope from the tree yet, it will be available at our next few meetings. Thanks, Jay!
Paige's craft talk
by Ken Eastman

Last week, Paige Hibbits told us that she's the oldest of three triplets. Growing up as part of a military family, she's lived all over the world. She has BS degrees in accounting and psychology. Paige's first marriage ended after 23 years, and she relocated from Westlake Village to Santa Barbara to re-start her career. Later, she moved to Telluride, Colorado, where she met and married David Hibbits.

Here in Camarillo, Paige operates her own accounting and tax preparation business. She also is active in Meadowlarks and many other local civic organizations. And among the things we probably didn't know:  she's a licensed pilot and a certified ski instructor!

How to get your blue badge
by Ken Eastman

If you currently have a red badge and you'd like to change it to blue, here's a checklist of what you need to do:  1) attend a board meeting, 2) make up a meeting at another club, 3) give a brief (10 minutes or less) "craft talk" to our club, 4) meet as many of our members as possible every Wednesday, and 5) check out the Rotary International website (http://www.rotary.org).
Add your website link to your roster page
by Ken Eastman

Did you know that you can add a link to your own website on your Camarillo Rotary roster page? Just go to our site, click on the "Admin" tab then click on "Edit My Profile" in the "My ClubRunner" section. Near the top of your roster form, you'll see a box for "Web site URL". Important:  when you enter your web address, don't forget to use the full http://www. at the beginning; otherwise, the link won't work.
How's your attendance?
by Ken Eastman

Rotary requires that you attend or make up at least 50% of your club's regular meetings in each half of the year. If you'd like to know how you're doing, here's an easy way to check your percentage:  just go to our website, click on the "Admin" tab at the top and then click on "My Attendance" in the My ClubRunner section. When you do, you'll see a full report on your attendance since the start of this Rotary year (July 1), including your percentage.

Don't forget--if you miss our regular meeting, it's easy to make up by attending a meeting of the Breakfast Rotary Club of Camarillo, 7 AM every Tuesday at Spanish Hills Golf & Country Club. You can also make up by attending any Rotaract or Interact club meeting, or by showing up at our club's monthly board meeting (every second Tuesday, 12 noon at the Camarillo Health Care District, 3639 E. Las Posas Road, Camarillo, Suite 160).

Information for prospective members
by Ken Eastman

If you've been talking to, or plan on talking to, a prospective new member for our club, please note that there is now some good information on Rotary available on our website. Check the "Downloads" section and you'll see two publications:  "This is Rotary" and "Rotary Basics". Both are in pdf format, so you can view them on-screen or download and print. Either one will help a prospective member learn more about our great organization.
Add your spouse to the bulletin mailing list
by Ken Eastman

If your spouse has a separate e-mail address and you'd like him or her to receive our weekly club bulletin, just send the address to kreastman@adelphia.net and we'll be glad to add it to the mailing list. Thanks to President-Elect Dan Mayer for the idea.
