Membership
by Russell, Bob

Membership – Take It Seriously

We at Indio Sunrise have been fortunate to have retained as many members as we have. We went up to fifty at one time, but that didn’t last long. Why, because we didn’t keep the new people interested and involved. Granted, some of them were not Rotary material and no matter what we did to welcome them, it wasn’t enough.

I recently learned that we have 35 members in the club right now. At our next Board Meeting, we will lose about 5 or 6 members. The reasons for dropping them include non-payment of dues, lack of attendance, and resignation. This could drop us down to under 30 members.

I want to see this club survive and flourish. To do this we need active members. Many of our members have been members for a long time. They “earned their bones” and don’t really want to keep stepping up to fill those positions that always seem to be open.

Why do we need more members? We are a good club, a friendly club, and we’re getting along fine without bringing in more members. Wrong, we are a good club and a friendly club, but do you notice that, but for a few, no one seems to do anything except attend the meetings. If we had more members, we wouldn’t have to work so hard to get the participation needed.

We have a lot to offer a new member. Look around you; the vast majority of our members have been President of this club or other clubs. We could share this experience with the new members; encourage them to take office and Committee Chairs. Give them the opportunity to “earn their bones” so that they can sit around and do nothing when their time comes.

Rotary is working hard to promote Membership. No one wants to see this great organization become anything less than the #1 Service Club in the world.

Talking about increasing membership isn’t going to get the job done. We have to get out and recruit those potential Rotarians. You know who they are. They are men and women like you and me, already working at servicing our community in one form or another. They are just waiting to be asked. What do you say to them when they ask what Rotary is? Just let them know that we are a fellowship of like-thinking men and women that work together to service the needs of our Community, our Country, and the World. Then invite them to attend our meeting to learn more about the good that Rotary does.

Sponsoring a new member will help strengthen our club through new ideas, new contacts, and more people to share in the work at our events and fund-raisers.

A thriving community has many things:

  • Strong families who live with opportunities and hopeful futures.
  • Healthy children, who are excited about learning, feel safe in their neighborhood and dream about their future.
  • A quality of life where residents are working, happy and productive

However, some areas of the Coachella Valley face greater challenges in their effort to provide opportunities and services for their community. With the help of supporters and other organizations, The Coachella Valley Community Trust fights against these challenges.

Our mission is to foster productive and responsible young people through effective community collaborations.

Exchange of Club Banners

ImageExchange of Club Banners

One of the colorful traditions of many Rotary clubs is the exchange of small banners, flags, or pennants. Rotarians traveling to distant locations often take banners to exchange at make-up meetings as a token of friendship. Many clubs use the decorative banners they have received for attractive displays at club meetings and district events.

The Rotary International Board recognized the growing popularity of the banner exchange back in 1959 and encouraged participating clubs to ensure that the design of their banners is distinctive and expressive of the club’s community and country. It is recommended that banners include pictures, slogans, or designs portraying the territorial area of the club.

Exchanging club banners is a very pleasant custom, especially when a creative and artistic banner tells an interesting story of community pride. The exchange of banners is a significant tradition of Rotary and serves as a tangible symbol of our international fellowship.

Thanks to Byron for keeping the tradition active
