Navy Guest
Sent to us courtesy of NASWI PAO office rep Tony Popp.

Today's guest is LTjg Alex Rodeck, VP-46 Pilot, and ex-Enlisted Aircrewman. Alex hails from Burlington IA and comes from a family of Naval Service: Dad was USMC, Step-Dad & Mom were USN. From High School in 2004, Alex attended Iowa State 's program in Veterinary Science & Med (Large Animal), before enlisting in the USN. He completed Navy Boot training and then a Technical A-School training program, and most of the Aircrewman pipeline training at NAS Pensacola FL; the last two weeks of which was interrupted by hurricane Ivan (which decimated the base, all schools and hangars, and damaged or destroyed all other buildings. Alex was sent to Jacksonville FL to complete the remainder of the Aircrew training program - which turned out to be mostly 'on-the-job' training.
After getting his Aircrew Wings, Alex reported to VP-30 (P3C FRS) as a student, to learn to operate the P3C and to execute all assigned missions. Upon completion of the FRS (about 6 months), Alex reported to VP-5 in 2005 for 1st fleet tour.
In 2006, Alex was selected for the Naval Aviation OCS program as a candidate for Naval Flight Officer, but was later re-routed to the Pilot training program at the USAF Flight School in Oklahoma. He completed that and then went to NAS Corpus Christi to complete the US Navy pilot training. So, in late 2008, Alex reports back to VP-30 FRS, with Navy Pilot wings of gold, as a student in the P3C Pilot program. In 2009, Alex reported to NASWI and VP-46 for his first fleet tour as a P3C Pilot. In May/June time-frame, Alex expects his first deployment as a 'P3C Patrol Plane 3rd Pilot' under training.

Alex will then follow the same route as Lisa Susan's hubby, Jeff Ward; about 2.5 yrs to qualify as Pilot-in-Command, then Patrol Plane Commander; and about 3 yrs until designation as Patrol Plane Mission Commander (if all goes well !!). Alex met his wife in his home town of Burlington, and they now have a son 3 1/2, and daughter 1 1/2.

Student Guest
Hosted and introduced by Principal Dwight Lundstrom.

Our Student Guest today is Janika Bainco, Sr. at OHHS, GPA of 3.066 and class rank of 112 of 435.
Janika is fully involved and quite busy in school activities. She has been an active member of the NJROTC program throughout her student career at OHHS. For the 1st semester this year, Jamika was the XO and was recently promoted to CO. She is also the company's Physical Strength Team commander. Janika chose NJROTC because she knew "...it would be the best environment to challenge myself...and...to become a stronger person". Janika is also part of the new initiative at OHHS, the "Student 2 Student" program. It is similar to Link Crew but is for upper classmen and is only for military dependents. Janika also swims on the OHHS swim teams, JV & Varsity.
Janika took 2 AP classes last year (Language/Composition, and Science/Biology); and is taking 2 AP classes this year (Literature/Composition, and American Government).

Outside of school work, Janika has worked as a recruiter and as swim coach; and now substitutes for the coaches of the local swim team when needed. She also works as a timer or as 'feedback coach' sometimes during swim-meets.

Janika plans to get accepted into Western Washington Univ. to study child education and hopes to become an elementary school teacher. Janika has applied for a WAVE scholarship and plans to use her dad's GI Bill to help monetarily.

CDR Black writes this about her: "Janika has been an outstanding cadet during her 4 yrs in the NJROTC program. She personifies the program core values of honor, courage and commitment. Talented and versatile, Janika strives for excellence in everything that she does. She is a great role model for the younger cadets. Based upon her outstanding performance, commitment to NJROTC, and impressive leadership skills, Janika was recently selected to serve as the CO of the NJROTC unit for the remainder of the school year. Chief Petty Officer Thiel and I are very proud of Janika and her many accomplishments".
