Nov. 2009 Thanksgiving Basket Drive

On November 24, 13 of us gathered at Shaws supermarket in Chapel View to put together & distribute 67 baskets to needy families served by agencies in our city. Each basket contained the trimmings for a complete Thanksgiving dinner: A frozen turkey, a 5-pound bag of potatoes, a can of cranberry sauce, a box of stuffing mix, a dozen eggs, a loaf of bread, two canned vegetables, a gallon of milk & a pumpkin pie. The baskets were picked up by staff or clients of the Cranston Community Action Program; CODAC, which serves families suffering from substance abuse; the Cranston YMCA; & SpurwinkRI, which provides group homes for adults with disabilities. Thanks to the generosity of Shaws, which gave us sale prices on all items & a flat rate on the turkeys, we may have an overage of several hundred dollars. We plan to donate this to help more needy people over the coming holidays.
