1. When, where, and by whom was Rotary organized?
Rotary began through the efforts of four Chicago men. Each represented a different occupation: mining engineering, the coal industry, merchant tailoring, and the law. The attorney, Paul P. Harris, first conceived the idea of Rotary. To him is credited the vision which culminated in the worldwide Rotary movement. The first meeting was held in Chicago on February 23, 1905.
2. When did Rotary take on an international character?
The international character of Rotary dates from the Duluth convention in 1912. At this convention Canada was represented by a delegation from the Winnipeg Club. In addition, during this convention, a cabled application was received from London, England. The official title adopted was the 'International Association of Rotary Clubs.' This title was later changed to 'Rotary International.'
3. Why was the name 'Rotary' adopted?
In the beginning of the organization, the meetings were held in rotation at the offices of the members.

A Rotary Club is an association of persons united to practice the ideal of service; service to Rotary and to others in behalf of Rotary.

10. How is Community Service defined in Rotary?
Community Service is defined in Rotary as those things Rotarians do in their many community relationships which demonstrate thoughtfulness and helpfulness. These acts may be performed by the Rotarian as an individual, or in conjunction with others, Rotarians and non-Rotarians. They vary greatly, according to local conditions. They include civic, educational. patriotic, and philanthropic enterprises on behalf of children, youth, health, recreation, and many others.
In substance, Rotarians believe that if there is a job to be done in a community and there is no other organization to do it, the Club might take steps to get it started and build it into a Community Project. However, if there is a suitable organization to do it, then the Club might cooperate and strengthen the efforts rather than to duplicate those efforts.
11. How is International Service defined in Rotary?
International Service is defined as those things a Rotarian can do to advance international understanding, good will, and peace. This can be accomplished by becoming acquainted with other people of other countries, and their cultures, customs, accomplishments, aspirations, and problems. Rotarians do this through personal contact in their own community, by travel and attending Rotary meetings in other countries, by attendance at conventions, through reading and correspondence, and through cooperation in all Club activities that will be helpful to those in other lands.

12. How is Vocational Service defined in Rotary?
The obligation of holders of Rotary Classifications is to share with others the ideal of service in all the personal relationships in their business of profession.

16. Why is attendance at Rotary Club meetings so important?
A. A Rotarian's interest in the Club and the Club's values as well as the Rotarian's value to the Club are in direct proportion to contact with fellow Rotarian's at Club meetings.
B. A Rotarian's classification is only loaned to the Rotarian when becoming a member. It the Rotarian does not take proper care of that membership and develop usefulness by Club attendance the Rotarian is keeping someone else in the classification from doing so.

17. What recognition is given for perfect attendance?
The Rotary Club of Gurnee recognizes perfect attendance by presenting a lapel button bearing the number of years of perfect attendance including the year just completed. This presentation is made at the annual installation dinner. Each Rotarian is urged to make a special effort to maintain perfect attendance for at least one Rotary year.
18. Why does Rotary limit membership in a Club to representation from only one of each classification (except news media and religion classifications)?
The principal reasons for this limitation follow:
A. It enables the Club to be a true cross-section of the business and professional life of the community.
B. It develops fellowship based on diversity of interest instead of similarity of interest.

20. What are the Qualifications for Active Membership in a Rotary Club?
Each active member shall be an adult person of good character and enjoy business or professional reputation. They should be engaged as proprietor, partner, corporate, officer,
or a manager of a worthy and recognized business or profession; or they should hold an important position in an executive capacity with discretionary authority in a worthy and recognized business or profession. In the last case, they should have entire charge of the agency or branch in an executive capacity. In all categories they must be personally and actively engaged in the business or profession which the classification is granted. In Addition, the place of business or the residence must be located within the territorial limits of the Club.
21. What are the qualifications for Honorary Membership and its duration?
Any adult who is distinguished in meritorious service in the furtherance of Rotary ideals, who resides within or who is definitely associated with the territorial limits of a Rotary Club, may be elected to Honorary membership in that Club. An Honorary member pays no fees or dues. Honorary members are not considered as representing any business or profession, have no vote and cannot hold office. They are entitled to attend all meetings and enjoy all other privileges in any Club. Honorary members have no rights or privileges in any Club other than that of which they are a member.
Honorary membership terminates on the first day of July after the date of election to honorary membership. The board of Directors may, by resolution, continue the Honorary membership from year to year.

22. How may Active Members of a Rotary Club lose membership?
Active membership continues until terminated by death of the member, or unless terminated in anyone of the following ways:
A. By moving both residence and place of business or profession from the territorial limits of the Club.
B. By ceasing to be personally and actively engaged in the classification of business
or profession represented.
C. By misconduct.
D. By non-payment of dues.
E. Failure to meet attendance requirements.
F. By resignation.
23. Do membership classifications of members describe their positions with the firm, or the business in which they are engaged?
Classifications held by Rotary Club members reflect either the primary activity of their firm or the work they do within the firm. For example, an accountant with a railroad could hold either the classification of 'Railroads' or ' Accounting.'
24. If a member of a Rotary Club is guilty of conduct unbecoming a Rotarian, has the Club any right to action against this member?
Yes. The membership of members who fail to conduct themselves or their business in accordance with the principles and ethics of Rotary may be terminated by two-thirds vote of the Board of Directors at a meeting called, for that purpose. The member will be given at least ten days notice in writing of such pending action.
25. If a Rotarian moves from one Rotary Club area to another and the classification is open in the Club in the new area, may the Rotarian have the membership transferred to that Club?
No. The Rotarian must again be properly proposed and elected. However, a member of Rotary who moves to another area, may request the Board to extend membership for a period not to exceed one year. Then the Club in the new area may be visited as a visiting Rotarian.
26. May Rotary Clubs, as clubs, join other organizations?
No. A Rotary Club as a unit of Rotary International should not become a member of any other organization.
27. What is the understanding of Rotary on politics?
Rotary Clubs shall not endorse or recommend any candidates for public office and shall not discuss at any Club meeting the merits of any candidate. The Club shall not take any action endorsing or condemning any measure which is to be submitted to the vote of the people.

28. What is Rotary International and its purpose?
Rotary International is The Association of Rotary Clubs throughout the world with
the duty to:
A. Preserve unit of purpose and action.
B. Encourage, promote, extend and supervise Rotary throughout the world.
C. Coordinate and generally direct the activities of Rotary International.
29. Is a Rotarian a member of Rotary International?
No. The Rotarian is a member of a Rotary Club, and the Club is a member of Rotary Internati onal.
30. How is membership in Rotary International constituted?
Rotary International is an association of all the Rotary Clubs in the world. Rotary is usually restricted to one Club from each well defined local, political or governmental subdivision: city or county. However, when a city, borough, or municipal area already has a Rotary Club, but has a well defined commercial or trade center, an additional Club or Clubs may be formed. The charter is approved by Rotary International.

The central office is in Evanston Illinois.
32. Does Rotary International have any other offices?
Yes. There are regional offices in Zurich, Switzerland; Stockholm, Sweden; Sao Paulo, Brazil; Sydney, Australia; Tokyo, Japan; Seoul, Korea; Delhi, India; Manila, Philippines; Buenos Aires, Argentina; and London, England.

It has no official meaning, but various Rotarians have made inspirational and beautiful interpretations of its significance.

No. The emblem should not be used in this way.

The Rotarian, a monthly magazine is the official magazine of Rotary International.
The editorial and business offices are located in Evanston, Illinois.
37. What is the 'Official Directory?
The "Official Directory' is a booklet issued once a year by Rotary International containing a list of all Rotary Clubs in the world and showing the names and addresses of the president and secretary of each Rotary Club and the place, day, and time of the meeting. Also included is a list of the international offices and committees and other information of interest and value to Rotarians.
Rotarians, especially those who travel extensively, are urged to carry a copy of this directory with them to help in locating Clubs for attendance make-up. Copies may be obtained through Rotary International. The 'Official Directory' is not to be used by Rotarians or others as a commercial mailing list.
38. What is a Club Assembly?
Once a year the Rotary Club of Gurnee holds what is known as a 'Club Assembly' with the District Governor in attendance. The assembly is held for the purpose of discussing, planning and coordinating the various Club activities for the year. Rotary International is divided into Districts for administrative purposes. Each District is presided over by a District Governor, nominated annually at the District Conference and elected at the next International Convention. The District Governor takes office on July 1st and acts under the direction of the Board of Directors of Rotary International.
As Rotary has grown in membership and the number of Rotary Clubs has increased, the number of Districts have also been increased. The Rotary Club of Gurnee is a member of District 6440.
40. What Is a Rotary District Conference?
It is a meeting of Rotarians held annually in each District. The purpose of the conference is to further the program of Rotary through fellowship, inspirational addresses, and discussions relating to District affairs and Rotary International generally.
