A cornerstone of Rotary International is to increase international understanding through philanthropy to developing nations, international affiliatiations between clubs, and many opportunities for international travel and student or work exchange between Rotary Clubs.
Rotary is more than just international philanthropy. It is an opportunity to meet Rotarians from around the world at our weekly meetings, attend meetings at any of Rotary's 32,000 clubs worldwide, and opportunities to travel or study abroad, advised or hosted by other Rotary families.
Current International Club Projects
Guatemala
Water Project
Our premier project is improving the quality of life for 200 orphaned children at the Aldea Infantil Rudolf Walther home in Salcaja, Guatemala through a multiphase project targeted at alleviating the problem of contaminated water. The project began in 2003 and is expected to continue for eight years. We have already completed the water storage tank and pumping system. This year we will begin to rebuild the septic systems in addition to constructing a more effective irrigation system for improving clean water in a town of 5,000 people in Flores Honduras and the Aldea orphanage.
Romania
Literacy Program
The InocentiEarly Literacy Program brings trained volunteers into the homes of handicapped, abandoned and foster children in order to strengthen their early language and literacy skills, and enhance parent-child interactions. The Inocenti Psychologists who run the program are responsible for recruiting, training and supervising approximately fifty local volunteers annually using a specially-designed curriculum of books and activities developed by two reading specialists from the United States. The program has been successfully serving the young people of BistritaCounty for six years. In order to extend the Inocenti Early Literacy Program to additional communities, we are seeking funding to provide books and supplies for those children in need.
Romania
Physical Therapy Program
There are over 1,300 disabled children living in Bistrita, 830 of which suffer with a physically or mentally limiting handicap. The InocentiPhysical Therapy Program is aimed at mitigating developmental delays in young children by providing intensive physical therapy delivered in a recuperative center and in their homes. Our project seeks to provide the child's caretaker with physical therapy equipment to allow them to continue treatment between therapists' visits.
PolioPlus Program
PolioPlus, the most ambitious program in Rotary's history, is the volunteer arm of the global partnership dedicated to eradicating polio. For more than 20 years, Rotary has led the private sector in the global effort to rid the world of this crippling disease. Today, PolioPlus and its role in the initiative is recognized worldwide as a model of public-private cooperation in pursuit of a humanitarian goal.
In addition to providing financial and volunteer support, Rotary works to urge support from other public and private sector partners. This includes the campaign to End Polio Now, inspired by the extraordinary challenge grants received from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
