Many thanks to Jim and Karen Jones for opening their home for a bbq to celebrate all the hard work the Rotarians and spouses did selling 50-50 tickets every Wednesday and Saturday all summer. Good job all! and thanks Mother Nature for the good weather. Robert Smith managed the food and was the master bbq-er, you did a great job. Fun came in many forms, 'newfie golf', horseshoes, cooling off in the pool, sipping a beverage while chatting with others, watching the fire. On Thursday August 12th, the club held a social at the home of Tom & Grace Bennett to celebrate Nick Jones' 19th Birthday (which is actually Friday the 13th). This was a new experience for Nick, as an exchange student from New Zealand, his birthday always falls during their winter back home, so celebrating on a warm sunny day In Canada was a unique experience. About 40 Rotarians, partners, families and friends came out. As Nick is an avid games player and competitor some special activities were planned. The group was divided into teams and each team had to participate in a tug-of-war, a synchronized board walk, and stunt relay race. Good fun was had by all and no one got hurt, other than pride. The social committee under the leadership of Robert "the Q-master" Smith prepared burgers and sausage, and everyone contributed salads, appetizers and sides. Margaret Currie prepared a spectacular birthday cake done up as the football field (soccer for us Canucks) of Nick's favourite team, Newcastle United. Nick was truly overwhelmed by all the gifts. Thanks to all for participating and making this a fun event. To view photos of Nick's birthday, click here
The Rotary Clubs of Peterborough and Peterborough-Kawartha again this year supported the

June 24th, 2010: Richard Levert, District Governor of District 7010, 2009-2010, passed the gavel to Dawn Straka, District Governor, 2010-2011, in a dinner ceremony at the Best Western Otonabee in Peterborough. Thirteen rotary clubs and seven PDG's and spouses were represented at the changeover.
The International Dragon Boat Festival was held in Peterborough last weekend, and what a party it was. People visiting here from all around the world! Amazing.
Our Rotary club played a part by hosting the beer tent, many thanks to the 30 volunteers, who gave approximately 150 hours of their time and who served lots and lots of beer and wine over the three days. Special thanks to Robert Smith who did his usual bang up job of running our event. Photos on the side bar to the right under 'photo journals'.
This event would not be possible with out the financial support of the Peterborough and Kawartha Rotary Clubs, Swish Maintenance and over 50 area businesses throughout the city. View photos here
It's wonderful to hear again from Isabell, our exchange student in France:
Sent May 5, 2010:
Greetngs All! Nearing the end of April and heading into May it's nice to see that the sun is out in clear blue skies and the trees are nice and green and leafy and it seems like perfect weather to begin my second last month of my year in France. Writing this as I look out the window and get an absolutely gorgeous view of the countryside in the South of France I really am going to miss this place... Though it's best to not dwell on the fact I will be returning home soon, instead focus in squeezing everything I can out of these last two months of my exchange.
Please sign in and see the entire tale of Isabell's adventures, in club documents under "Isabell: Letters From France".
Hello, This is an update Marlaine sent today about this Friday's trip to Marbial.
Friday: Today is the beginning of the 3 days of national prayer that the government announced a month after the earthquake. In every corner of the country, people consecrated themselves to pray according to their faith.
A triathlon of fun events to raise money for Haiti and have fun too was held on February 13, 2010 at the Lakefield Curling Club:
on behalf of the World Community Service Committee and the Jacmel orphanage and the Marbial school, I want to thank Jim Jones and his "Haiti Spiel" committee and volunteers for a great event of curling and fun this past Saturday. At this time, I have not been informed of the amount of money that was raised but I know that any amount will be greatly appreciated by the Haitians our Club supports. I think everyone had a great time whether they were curling or just helping out. There were many non-Rotarians there and I would like to thank them for supporting our Haitian relief effort. Thanks again for stepping up to the plate everyone! Photos of the day can be viewed here .
On behalf of the Health and Community Service committee, I just wanted to thank our team of Brian Prentice, our very own exchange student, Nick Jones, Al Morrison and his daughter for taking part in the Big Brothers/Big Sisters "Bowl for Kids" this past Friday evening. The "winning" team had a great time and Al's daughter even won the draw for some books which she is thrilled with. Thanks again for supporting another H & C S project - supporting our own Club projects while helping out a community service organization at the same time.
Yours in Rotary Lynne Chant, Health and Community Service Chair, Rotary Club of Peterborough-Kawartha

Well, we did it! Our Rotary Club's hands-on project for this year is now history. Eleven of us spent an absolutely beautiful winter's day at a very beautiful camp on Clear Lake painting and doing electrical work.

IN THE BEGINNING
There was district 701 of Rotary International which took in a large area of east central Ontario, north
Eastern Ontario and western Quebec. It comprised 37 community Rotary clubs from Havelock to Hearst. One of those was the Rotary Club of Peterborough (chartered in 1921) and it was the home club of John Cockburn who was the District Governor of 1989/90.

Each year our club hosts a Foundation evening, and presents Paul Harris recognitions in four avenues of service: Community, Vocational, International and Club. The first three are given to members of the community, the last one is given to a club member who has made a difference through service.
The concept of a Paul Harris fellow is the original expression of appreciation by the rotary foundation trustees for an individual, who either personally donates or in whose name is given, a gift of $US 1,000 to conduct the work of the rotary foundation. The rotary foundation benefits from the contribution and demonstrates their appreciation through the mechanism of a Paul Harris fellow. Paul Harris fellows and multi-fellows are the backbone of the annual support to the rotary foundation, and those donations are often the support that enables rotarians to carry on a world-wide program of educational and humanitarian programs.
Photos of the evening can be seen in the photo gallery bar at the right if the screen, and more
