Fellow Rotarians,
Thank you for this opportunity you have given me to work with you this year. I am excited to serve as governor in a district of vibrant and dynamic clubs, each unique, but joined together under the banner of Rotary to bring service to communities at home and overseas. Arlene and I look forward to visiting each club to learn more about your projects and successes, and to meet the people who make good things happen in their communities.
We had a busy June as we participated in eleven club executive installations and attended our first International Convention. The convention featured outstanding speakers, some excellent entertainment, and inspiring speeches by John Kenny and Ray Klinginsmith. We also enjoyed the fellowship, meeting Rotarians from around the world and getting together with Rotarians from District 5050 while in Montreal.
Now the new Rotary year has begun, and our club visits start on July 28th. We have our own district theme this year, "Be Your Best," and I will elaborate on that when I make my official visit to your club. I encourage each Rotarian to be your best and by doing so you will make your clubs the best that they can be, and our district will continue to be a leader in Zone 24.
RI President Ray Klinginsmith chose our international theme to tell the world what Rotary does, and to validate the work Rotarians are doing. "Building Communities â€" Bridging Continents" accurately describes the Rotary achievements through local and international service projects. We can rally behind this theme as we proudly tell others about the joy of service above self and how Rotarians are making a difference in this world.
Eradicating polio remains our #1 priority and challenge, and we are getting ever closer to achieving our goal. We in District 5050 have been very generous in raising funds to meet the $200 million challenge, and I am sure we will surpass our initial targets for giving to this global enterprise. Please continue to support Golfun and your own club's Polio Plus fundraisers so we can announce a grand total at our next district conference and celebrate together.
The district conference will be held May 5-8, 2011 at Harrison Hot Springs Resort & Spa, and will be followed by the International Convention in New Orleans on May 21-25, 2011. Arlene and I will be there, and hope many of our district's Rotarians will be able to join us.
We have a strong team of Assistant Governors and district committees in place to assist clubs in their goals and projects, and I encourage you to call on their expertise. In keeping with the spirit of the "Pride" and "Pilot" pins given out by my predecessors Larry, your AGs and I will be presenting "Be Your Best" district pins to a few members of clubs identified by their presidents as especially deserving of this award.
It is not too late for you to join a district committee should you wish to carry on Rotary work beyond the club level. Let your AG or me know your interests, and we'll find a spot for you to contribute.
Rotarians will continue to promote literacy, provide clean water, and help alleviate hunger in our world. We have added a fifth avenue of service, New Generations, and will increase our focus on youth and bringing younger adults into Rotary. The Avenue of New Generations recognizes the positive change implemented by youth and young adults involved in leadership development activities, community and international service projects, and exchange programs that enrich and foster world peace and cultural understanding.
RI President Ray has encouraged us to apply cowboy logic to become "bigger, better, bolder" and I am encouraging each club to strive for a net one increase in membership this year. New members will bring new vitality and ideas, and will help us keep Rotary strong, as we go about our work of Building Communities,Bridging Continents, making our world a better place for all of us.
Let's have a great Rotary year.
Wayne A. Wiebe
District Governor 2010-2011

On July 10th 2009 our club met with the Visioning Team to assess our ideas for the future of our club. Rotary International has embraced future planning as a method of creating continuity and leadership goals for themselves so creating a planning vision at the club level seems a good fit. Here are our goals as defined under 10 headings.
