James Gibson did the inspiration this week. To the laughter of the audience he began by saying that since there has been a lot of
politics in the news/ on television, we should mull over how politicians speak
and reflect on it.
He then paraphrased a Mississippi legislator, Judge Sweat, who said he
wouldnot "shun controversy" and
would "take a stand" on legalizing liquor in the state
Vidal Graupera gave the Red Badge talk. Vidal said he was very excited and proud to be a member of Cupertino Rotary and to be able to present. He said he grew up in Miami, Florida, but his parents were from Cuba. He said that his parents actually knew Fidel Castro and were friends of his and often had coffee together.
They left before the Revolution. He had typical Cuban family upbringing. He noted that his family lastname
came from Barcelona Spain which was a great place and somewhere we should all visit!

The
members of the Cupertino Rotary present on February 3 enjoyed a wonderful
concert of jazz music from the Monta Vista Jazz Choir. Jerra Rowland introduced
John Galli, Monta Vista High School teacher and director of the jazz
group.Mr. Galli explained that
rather than have one large jazz band, he created four jazz combos who rehearsed
at the same time.He brought one
of the top groups to perform for Rotary.
The
jazz combo involved six musicians and included piano, drums, electric guitar,
electric bass guitar, alto saxophone and tenor saxophone. The group opened with a Herbie Hancock
piece which featured a guitar solo. This was followed by "Miles Tones" written
by the innovative musician Miles Davis and featured an alto saxophone solo.
The
third selection which featured a piano solo was "Song for My Father".This was followed by George Gershwin's
"Summertime" from the Porgy and Bess Opera. This piece included a tenor saxophone solo. The fourth and final number was Herbie
Hancock's "Chameleon" from his Headhunters album. This song opened with a brief bass guitar solo and included
a guitar solo.
The
performance was outstanding and very well received by those present. We look forward to a return visit.
We are going to be
celebrating the upcoming Lunar New Year with an Asian food at our next lunch. Our caterer will be long time Cupertino resident Amber Heyman.

From time to time club members want to submit information or articles to the Rotator. To do so, the information should be submitted to the Editor by 9 am Thursday.
Our editors are assigned as follows: First Wednesday - Tom Scannell; Second Wednesday - Krishna Kumar; Third Wednesday - Peter Troop; Fourth Wednesday - Helene Davis; Fifth - Wednesday - Helene Davis.
On occasion, the editors sub for one another. If you are unsure who the editor is, then it would be prudent to submit your information to all editors.
Have you noticed recently how great the slides are that are projected during our meeting. This is the work of Jerra Rowland. I am not quite sure what her title is. She may be assistant secretary or just plain technical wizard. More...
