The RCOP visited the Ianthe Pratt as its first stop on a tour of the local primary school to test kids for vision problems. In partnership with Dr Julian Petrucci, who generously donated his time, we tested 45 kids at IPPS, and will move on to Oseta Jolley and Enid Capron schools next. The program is supported by a Simplifed Grant from District 7020.
The dictionary project hit the road this week and ventured to North Caicos and Middle Caicos where we visited 3 primary schools. We handed out close to 150 of the very popular dictionaries. We were met with enthusiastic and grateful students and teachers who loved the handy reference books and all the cool stuff they found in their new lifelong learning friend. PP John got stumped by some of the 5th graders on a few tricky words, but all in all, it was a very successful trip!
AG Karen visited Grand Turk this week and delivered a brand new phone to our friend Steven Stubbs. Thanks to Micky and Cheryl for making the arrangements with LIME to get him one!
The RCOP held its elections for the 2010-11 Rotary Year and the results are:
President: Art Forbes President-elect: Owen Hamilton Vice President: Cheryl Ann Shand Secretary: Tanis Wake Forbes Treasurer: Ivan Browne Director: Bloneva Williams Director: Jai Tolani Director: Lester Forman Director: George Missick
The RCOP made history this weekend by hosting its first ever Rotary Leadership Institute (RLI) training session. RLI is a comprehensive program to help educate Rotarians on various aspects of Rotary. The course is implemented in 3 parts, and we hosted a session for Part 1. In total 19 Rotarians attended, including representatives from Grand Turk and Cat Island (Bahamas) clubs.
Big thanks to Haresh Ramchandani of Montego Bay, Jamaica, who led the session, along with discussion leaders Felix and Carla Stubbs from Nassau, and our own PP John Lawson, who made his debut as a RLI discussion leader at the session.
A fun day visiting the Provo elementary schools and handing out dictionaries to the 3rd graders. A great literacy project and much appreciated by the kids and teachers alike. President Mike even learned how to spell i-n-f-o-r-m-a-t-i-o-n (thanks to the kids at Enid Capron) Nice job Community Service team! Photos here.
The RCOP enjoyed a day of fun, relaxation and competition at the mini golf course on September 19. A great turnout and an intense match ended with a team consisting of mother-daughter combos - Thashena and her daughter, Toni and her daughter - plus Rotarian of the Year Joy, winning top prizes. Thashena also took home the closest to the pin prize. A good time was had by all. See Photo Gallery for more photos.
President Mike, PDG Karen and Norma headed to North Caicos this past weekend to help support the 1st Annual Back to School Jamboree for the kids of North and Middle Caicos. Held at Miss B's Plaza, the event attracted eager school kids who enjoyed games and fun, and goodie bags full of back to school supplies courtesy of the RCOP. We even met old friend Wilbet Forbes there, who is trying to organize a Rotary Corps group on North.
Stephen Stubbs, a blind Turks and Caicos resident, is the proud recipient of a new computer and software that allows him to 'read' printed material, sort his music, and generally be a more productive person. Michelle Alway (left), his instructor from the H. Ross MacDonald School for the Blind in Ontario, helps Stephen at a recent RCOP Meeting.
Michelle trained Stephen on the new technology during an intensive week-long session at Beaches. The computer and software, along with Michelle's trip to TCI, was made possible through our friends at One World and was a cooperative effort among The Rotary Clubs of Watertown, New York (USA), Provo and Grand Turk, along with Beaches and the Social Services Department of TCIG.
Stephen is living on Grand Turk and will be starting a part time job with Radio Turks and Caicos as he pursues his dream of being a DJ.
The RCOP hosted DG Errol Alberga and his wife Leonie from August 17-21 as part of the annual trip to the Turks and Caicos that the leader of District 7020 makes. He visited both our club and Grand Turk (where he helped charter a new Rotaract Club!), and promoted the 2010 District Conference in his hometown of Kingston, Jamaica.
DG Errol attended a board meeting and our regular club meeting, toured the island, saw various projects we have done, and was guest of honor at a cocktail reception. He even managed to attend Sunday night Bingo. All in all, he came away impressed and re-iterated that the Provo Club remains one of the strongest in the District!
Jonathan Steers, GM of Nikki Beach, became our newest member of RCOP and had the additional privilege of getting inducted by DG Errol Alberga during his visit with us. Jonathan is looking forward to rolling up his sleeves and getting involved with community projects. Welcome Jonathan!
Bill Hosik, a member of our Think Caribbean partner club, the Rotary Club of Manassas, Virginia, paid us a visit last week and we exchanged flags. Bill dutifully brought the flag back to his next club meeting, and here is pictured with Club President Susan Strom with our unique banner. Our club is supporting their club's main project for the year, a hospital expansion in Haiti, which our DG (who is friends with their DG) is supporting as well. And the Manassas club hopes to send a group of members down in the Fall to help us with a hands on project here in Provo. Next time anyone is in the Washington DC area, make sure you drop in on The Manassas Club! They meet Wednesdays at lunch. Here's their web site: http://www.manassasrotary.org/
JULY 9, 2009 - After a l-o-n-g initiation period, Pendita Hutchinson finally made it official this week when she was inducted into the RCOP. She's been a great supporter of Bingo and we're happy to have her on board! Special thanks to Thashena for being her sponsor.
JULY 9, 2009 - The four kids we sponsored to attend the annual World Affairs seminar in Wisconsin paid our club a visit this week. They reported in great detail and excitement about their experiences at this outstanding event. The theme of this year's event was hunger and the high schoolers learned a great bit about the challenges our world faces in this regard. Plus, they had a chance to meet other kids from all over the world and share their culture and learn about how their peers live. They delivered excellent reports to the club and are obviously fine representatives of TCI (and hopefully, future Rotarians!) Special thanks to RoY Joy for chaperoning the kids and for Yvette for heading up this project.
JULY 2, 2009 - Welcome Louise Peterson, our first new Rotarian for 2009-10. Louise was sponsored by president Mike and inducted by Membership Chair Art at this week's meeting. She'll be joining Club Services.
July 5, 2009 – The Rotary Club of Providenciales this week handed over a specially equipped passenger van which it is donating to provide transportation to senior citizens of Middle Caicos. The donation is its way of saying thank you to those citizens for their guidance and leadership over the years and their kindness and generosity of spirit. A hand over ceremony was held today at the Middle Caicos Community Center, with a BBQ lunch and blessing by Pastor Campbell.

In fact, she had just returned from escorting the kids we sponsored at the World Affairs Seminar in Wisconsin!
Rotary club of Providenciales teams up with partner club in North Carolina to supply critical goods, vehicle to Provo Children's Home
JUNE 18, 2009 – The Rotary Club of Providenciales is nearing completion of a donation of a wide variety of essential goods and a vehicle to the Provo Children's Home (PCH) this week. The items were initially part of a support program for the original PCH, but became even more important when the old home was destroyed in last fall's hurricanes. The goods have been provided to the children and care givers in their temporary locations being used by the PCH. The donation was made possible through the local Rotary Club's partnership with the Rotary Club of High Point, North Carolina (USA), which together raised funds totaling almost $25,000 for the purchase of much needed goods and a vehicle to transport children to school and other activities.

JUNE 15, 2009 - Our popular fundraiser, the weekly Bingo game, moved to a new and more spacious venue this past week - The Tropicana Supper Club in the Bight. Owner Marvin Henfeld provided a great setting for the new home of Bingo - lots of tables and chairs, a full bar, and air conditioned comfort. At least 400 anxious players filled the room as the game began.
And, as luck would have it, the jackpot was hit on our first night at the 'Trop. Arios Alcide walked away with a cool $15Gs, ending a 6 month session.
Bingo will take a two week hiatus now, and be back in action again on July 5 at The Tropicana. Come out and help the cause, and join the fun.
JUNE 9, 2009 - Our fearless leader and Captain of the Good Ship Rotary for the past year took his team on a celebratory boat ride around Grace Bay this week. The cruise gave the board of directors a chance to reflect on an extremely productive and successful year, and toast our president John for his outstanding leadership.
MAY 23, 2009 - Under dark and dreary skies early one recent Saturday, the Community Services corps of the RCOP braved the elements and gamely erected a fun new playground equipment set for the kids at the Enquiring Minds school. Led by project champion Michelle Swann, the team made quick work of the assembly, daring to forge forward without even consulting the instructions. Foreman John Lawson and his unfatiguable Lawson crew are old hands at such kids play, and with the able assistance of Rotarians H "the Swing" Hinderaker, Raymond "The Slide" Cushnie and Val "The Shovel" Kalliecharan, they brought sunny skies to the kids at Enquiring Minds. See more photos in the Photo Album.
MAY 15, 2009 - The Rotary Clubs of Providenciales and Grand Turk combined efforts on a tree planting project to spruce up Grand Turk. Thanks to the kind donation of trees from Sunshine Nursery, the barge transportation services of CBMS, and the nursery facilities of Mr Murray in Grand Turk, the trees were used to beautify several locations around the capital, including the Onid Glinton Primary School. Special thanks to our Grand Turk clean up partners Projectech for their assistance in making the planting happen!

APRIL 10, 2009 - This year, the Rotary Club of Providenciales as the international partner, pledged to work co-operatively with the host partner, the Rotary Club of Zichron Yachov, This is a wine producing area north of Tel Aviv in Israel. Together they raised funds which provided specialized equipment for the Miskal Centre, a local educational centre for children with learning disabilities. The centre treats children from ages three to twelve in areas such as didactic testing, emotional counseling as well as occupational therapy and speech therapy. This is a fine example of Rotarians working together for the benefit of others, which follows the Rotarian motto of "Service Above Self".
APRIL 1, 2009 -- The Rotary Clubs of Provo and Grand Turk continue to help get Grand
Turk and Salt Cay back on their feet after Hurricanes Ike and Hannah
