Please join Scott Ostrow for a planning meeting for the Community Dinner. We need EVERYONE's help to make this event a success. The meeting will be on January, 25th at 6pm at Scott Ostrow's house.
This mid-year meeting is a chance for members to let the club leadership know how they think things are going. It is also a chance to brainstorm for new projects and fundraisers.
Light refreshments are served. Casual attire.
Spouses are encouraged to attend and particpate in the discussions. This is considered a regular meeting of the club and if you can not attend, you will need a make-up to remain at 100% attendance.
Patty Wharton will be emailing your house assignments. After we get several more host homes.....you will be able to click on Volunteering to see your Fireside Chat home assignment. You can add your spouse if they are not on the list.
As you may have heard by now, there was a devastating 7.0 earthquake in Haiti yesterday afternoon. News reports indicate that many government buildings, hospitals, and other infrastructure buildings have collapsed.
While the U.S. government is considering sending in troops to assist, there is no doubt that immediate financial assistance is going to be needed in the area. Haiti is one of the poorest nations in the Northern Hemisphere, and it's people need our help now.
If your club can afford to make any donations, please make a check payable to the Rotary District 5240 Charitable Foundation. Please mail it to the Rotary District 5240 office at: 3394 Bryan Ave., Simi Valley, CA 93063.
Please feel free to contact me, or Luz Maria, for any further information on the disaster and our plans to assist the area. Thank you in advance for your generosity!
Yours in Service,
Diane M. Galvin

The Rotary Foundation established a Haiti earthquake fund U.S. Rotarians can donate to help with short-, long-term recovery efforts. Donations contributed by your club, individual Rotarians or community members may be sent to the new Donor Advised Fund (DAF) set up by District 7020.
Another suggestion: Is to send your contributions directly to the District office - 3394 Bryan Ave. Simi Valley , CA 93063 - to keep track of the club and member donations. We want to ensure that member donations are coordinated and not sent to several different agencies or Rotary Districts and then the District can send the member donations to the DAF, which will directly support relief efforts in Haiti.
Please visit the District website to read DG Luz Maria's message.
Rotarians are gearing up to deliver aid to areas of Haiti rocked by a powerful earthquake 12 January as a major international relief effort takes shape.
"Rotarians are working hard and fast to get help to those in Haiti," says Past RI Director Barry Rassin, of Nassau, Bahamas, who has previously coordinated relief efforts in the country. "We're at the same time working on long-term efforts."
More than US$75,000 has been donated to District 7020 in the Caribbean, according to Past District Governor Dick McCombe. The district will be coordinating much of the Rotarian relief effort through its Haiti Task Force, set up two years ago to administer all financial aid to the nation.
To learn how you can help, e-mail District Governor Errol Alberga or visit the District 7020 website.

1.Wisconsin visitors and residents enjoy the state's 7,446 streams and rivers.
End-to-end they'd stretch 26,767 miles. That is more than enough to circle the globe at the equator.
2.Wisconsin's Door County has five state parks and 250 miles of shoreline along Lake Michigan. These figures represent more than any other county in the country.
3.In 1878-1879 the Wisconsin legislature approved the creation of a state park in Vilas County. The proposal was not successful and the state ended up selling two-thirds of area land to lumber interest for $8 an acre in 1897.

Some magnificent projects grow from very small seeds. The Rotary Foundation had that sort of modest beginning. In 1917 R.I. President Arch Klumph told the delegates to the Atlanta Convention that "it seems eminently proper that we should accept endowments for the purpose of doing good in the world." The response was polite and favorable, but the fund was slow to materialize.
It is that time of year again! The annual Kiwanis v Rotary Bell Ringing Challenge is scheduled for December 15th. Rotarians will be ringing bells at K-Mart. Kiwanians will be ringing bells at Wal-Mart.
