Speaker at this meeting was our MLA for the Lloydminster (Sask) constituency. I am told that his address was very interesting and straight forward. Unfortunately, I did not attend so this is not a personal report. Here's Tim's information stolen directly from his web page:
Darren discussed his plans for the club for the coming year beginning with new RI President John Kenny's slogan, "The future of Rotary is in your hands". Darren laid out a four point challenge - his Gold Star committee challenge - his first 100 day countdown - membership growth; mentor and be mentored - new approaches. Darren asked for suggestions as to this year's president's project. Pictures in "Assorted Pictures" at right.More...

The Ulmer family has been involved with General Motors for many years and under the direction of Ross and brother Doug has expanded to ownership of 12 assorted dealerships in Alberta and Saskatchewan with a 13th opening soon. The current recession and crisis in the automobile industry has brought out many stories, some true some false about the domestic car manufacturers. For various reasons, GM seems to be in the most difficulty, resulting in government intervention and support. One of the government's requirements is the closing of about 40% of the dealerships, presenting those business owners with very difficult situations totally out of their control.

Then came the introduction of this year's honouree, Fountain Tire and its owner/manager Brant Wheeler and his key staff, Kent Staniforth, Skip Krake and Doug Lee.

It is obvious that his time here has been very enriching for him and for all that have been associated with him during his stay.
We had two very enthusiastic speakers on the subject of the Crime Stoppers program in Alberta. Since our recent change from Sask based RCMP F Division to Alberta based K Division, our Crime Stoppers focus has realigned to Alberta also. Flavia Robles spoke first about the organisation and its benefits. She was followed by RCMP Sgt. Blaine Rahier whose responsibility includes Crime Stoppers. The anonymity of calls to Crime Stoppers was strongly emphasized. The callers are not traced or identified and each tip is followed up. There is no government funding involved, it is all voluntarily donated.

Raf addressed the common misunderstandings of Islam. Islam is a monotheistic Abrahamic religion originating with the teachings of the Islamic prophet Muhammad, a 7th century Arab religious and political figure. The word Islam means "submission", or the total surrender of oneself to God (in Arabic: - Allah). An adherent of Islam is known as a Muslim, meaning "one who submits [to God]". There are between 1 billion and 1.8 billion Muslims, making Islam the second-largest religion in the world, after Christianity. Muslims believe that God revealed the Qur'an to Muhammad, God's final prophet, through the angel Gabriel, and regard the Qur'an as the fundamental source of Islam.

Common Wealth has had tremendous growth over the recent past and now has 430 employees at 15 locations, serving the needs of over 53,700 members and managing assets of $1.6 Billion. Innovation and differentiation means having the guts to come up with new ideas and develop them. These are not "one hit wonders", however, and you must be always challenging yourself to develop news ways to serve your customers and deal with your employees.

The federal and provincial governments have downloaded much of this responsibility onto local government which has put them into an impossible financial position.
