PDG Chris Offer provided examples of The Rotary Foundation's matching grant donations for local club initiatives. TRF is "A Foundation for the Future - doing good in the world". The Mission of The Rotary Foundation is to enable Rotarians to advance world understanding, goodwill and peace through the improvement of health, the support of education and the alleviation of poverty.
Rotarians are urged to become Sustaining Members with a gift to the Annual Programs Fund of $100 annually or becoming a Paul Harris Society member with a gift of $1,000 annually. Polio Plus donations are also strongly encouraged.
Some projects that his own club, Vancouver Chinatown, have been involved in provide examples of how RI and the Foundation help support these projects through matching grants.
Bacolod City, Philippines 2005 - The local hospital was operating under sever dire conditions and the combined club and RI support solutioned many of these situations. They also established training programs for girls from the orphanage who then go out and serve the community and the hospital. For the majority of these girls, they would otherwise end up in the sex trade environment.
An orphanage in Siberia that received no government support after the breakup of the USSR. With Rotary's help this situation is now improving.
Clengde, China 2008 - doctors from BC and the U.S. are providing hundreds of cleft lip and palate surgeries with the financial support of Rotary and RI.
Polio Plus - 2billion kids have been immunized since 1985 at a cost of over $1billion in donations. The Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation has donated $355million and Rotary has so far raised $107million towards the Gates' matching grant challenge of $200million. Bill Gates chose Rotary to work through rather than establishing his own project after much due diligence and determining that Rotary manages this program extremely well. This is a great vote of confidence in our ability to administer this great cause.
Major changes have been established by RI with a new grant focus where they are now looking at district and global projects that address the following: - basic education and literacy - disease prevention and treatment - economic and community development - maternal and child health - peace and conflic prevention and resolution - water and sanitation
As Rotary heads into our Second Century of Service support is critical for the development of a more peaceful and prosperous world. Check out RI's TRF-Direct options on www.rotary.org
