THIS
might be a great time to bring you up to date on what really good stuff
YOU DO because you are members of the GHRC. RECENTLY - YOUR blood
drive obtained 160 pints of blood which translated into some $60,000
worth of blood. YOU contributed almost $3,000 to Haiti relief in the
last 10 days. YOUR Vets Park project that pays tribute to the Veterens
is nearing completion and that is a $125,000 project. And, of
course, you have contributed to the RI Foundation and its work with
POLIO + to match the efforts of the GATES FOUNDATION contribution of
$300,000,000 (THAT IS MILLIONS). This is really big stuff folks. We
meet once a week. Each member pays dues of $70 a month and each member
raises or contributes $500 a year. Just think of the impact. Now, we
have two fund raisers (Bowling and Texas Hold Em) coming up that allows
us to get done what we do best. I am just so darn proud of this Club. YOU ARE THE VERY BEST ROTARY CLUB I CAN THINK OF. THANKS FOR
BEING ........ YOU !!! A great bunch of folks, doing great
work!

Shelterboxes are sponsored by service clubs, (Rotary Clubs), school and church
groups, businesses and individuals, etc. Materials are ordered from a range of
suppliers selected for general use, long-life, quality and price. Shelterboxes
are prepared and packed using all new materials as delivered from manufacturers,
at the Shelterbox warehouse based in Helston, Cornwall. The standard Shelterbox
weighs 110 lbs. and has approximate dimensions 2'3" x 1'4" x 11". They are sealed
and banded for transit and security. Box contents vary depending on the nature
of the disaster requiring their use.
Boxes Are sometimes packed with two 10-person tents in them, (to the exclusion
of some smaller items, to maximize shelter capacity. Some of the selected Box items
that are available for inclusion in the Box are:
One 49 gallon box (The Shelterbox) initially the container for delivery of the
materials listed below. Once delivered, can be used as water tank, food store,
cot, table, etc.
One ten-person tent,
including two fabric interior privacy partitions, outer fly-sheet and repair kit.
These tents are considered 'winter suitable' by international relief standards.
Vinyl insulated sleeping mats and lightweight thermal blankets. More compact than
sleeping bags, these mats and blankets have multiple uses. The blanket can also be
fashioned to catch water, as a tarp, etc. while the mat also serves as a ground
'table' for meals, or tent rugs.
One pack of 180 water purification tablets or a water purification kit; and one 5 gallon flat-pack water
container (Each tablet will purify a full container of water providing 1,800
gallons of clean drinking water which should be sufficient for a family of ten
for up to three months).
Two 2.1 gallon, collapsible, plastic water carriers.
One collapsible trenching shovel
Rope, 164 foot
Repellant-treated mosquito netting
Ten PVC Ponchos/ ten HD plastic bags
Tool kit in canvas bag: hachet, jack-knife, screwdriver, hammer, hoe head etc.
Multi-fueled cook stove
Eating utensils: enamel plates/cups
Children's activity kit-simple school supplies, stickers and coloring book
The contents are under continuous review. A small stock of wind-up radios
(short-wave and FM) has been obtained to substitute a sleeping bag in every
tenth box should such a requirement arise.
For shipping purposes, a large container (40 feet) can accommodate up to 240
Shelterboxes, smaller containers would typically be half the size and quantities.

Why is that?
Every year, we are fortunate to have the Hillcrest Choir join us with a Special Holiday Performance. The group is wonderful. The best. They travel the world doing what they
just did for our Rotary Club. They are planning on traveling to Rome and will actually be singing in
the Vatican. Can you believe it, the Vatican?
Thank you, Hillcrest Choir, for another wonderful Holiday Performance.

President's Message
- Posted prior to July 1, 2009
When I hear the words 'New'
or 'Crisis', I think of our opportunities. With a NEW Year, we have so many
opportunities.
We will continue to provide Scholarships to deserving students. Recognize the good Sportsmanship of young people. Assist the needy and honor
our veterans. In addition, we will establish some New "Hands-On" type
projects; that will be so important to so many people in need. I encourage you to
bring your ideas to our attention...... Potential crisis, such as
Earthquake or Fire, presents us with the opportunity to serve our community in a
very important way.
Our DISASTER PREPARDNESS Program will allow us to play an
important role in our Community when faced with the next crisis. John Kenny, our new
Rotary International President, believes that the power of Rotary lies in
the local clubs. His theme this next year is "THE FUTURE OF ROTARY IS IN YOUR
HANDS".

Happy New Year! Now that the holidays are behind us, we look forward to a new year, with new hope. It is time to make resolutions and set goals.
Rotarians will always find friends whereever they may travel in the world. During the holidays, I attended the club of which my father is a member, the Rockwall Rotary Club in Rockwall, Texas. I was warmly welcomed and felt right at home. We should all resolve to invite friends and acquaintances to our meetings more often. Each one of us could make it a goal to bring in at least one new member this year.
Those seeking personal improvement should consider attending PRLS (Professional Rotary Leadership Seminar), next Sunday January 18, 2009 at Sam's Cafe following the district leadership meeting.

Are we having fun? You bet we are. On Saturday night, GHRC Rotarians partied at the GHRC Holiday Party at President Rob and Nancy Norris' party villa. The company, food and chit-chat was fantastic! Are you behind on your Rotary dues? Watch out--we have a powerful new Treasurer this year who might be calling you soon! Ha! Actually, our Club is incredibly lucky to have Elizabeth Snider doing such a great job. Always a smile and a friendly word. Maybe that's because she has access to all our operating income?
The Granada Hills Rotary Club welcomed District Governor, Connie Cashin, for some Rotary motivation. Connie shared her vision with our members, and discussed the International Rotary message for 2008-2009, "Make Dreams Real". This year we'll all work to improve child mortality rates, increase literacy and promote clean water. One way for all of us to help achieve these goals is to give to the Rotary Foundation! Let's eradicate polio.
Many thanks to Dianne Kartiala for hosting the Granada Hills Rotary Club's most recent Fireside Chat. Over 20 members and their families gathered to share some good old fashioned Rotary fellowship, while feasting on delicious ice cream and goodies. Over the past few months we've welcomed several new members--who took some time at the Fireside Chat to learn about ways to get involved in our club's projects. If you haven't been to one of our meetings in awhile...you might want to come introduce yourself to these new Rotarians! What can I say? We're irresistable!
OK--I probably didn't get you with this Halloween joke! They weren't vampires, they were members of the American Red Cross. In the wake of recent disasters in our club's area, Jim Feffer (and other GHRC members) took some time to help replenish the blood supply for the American Red Cross. Way to go, Jim! By the way--are you O+?
The Granada Hills Rotary Club made a splash at the annual Granada Hills Chamber of Commerce Street Faire on October 4th (Literally!). The weather was gloomy and wet, but that didn't stop members from spreading the word about our plans for a Tribute Walk at the Veterans Memorial Park. So far the club has received orders for almost 150 inscribed bricks--which will be installed at the Groundbreaking Ceremony on Saturday, November 8th at 10:00am. Plan to join us as we unveil our next phase of beautification plans for the park. And congratulations to the Veterans Park Committee led by Carl Melnick and Don Cosby for all its hard work.
Drew Frohlich took some time out of his day to share the Granada Hills Rotary spirit with a fellow club in Santa Clarita. Drew has been selected as the Rotary District 5260 District Governor Designate, and will serve as District Governor in 2010-2011. Our club is more than lucky to have such a wonderful Rotary role model and leader. More to come from him over the next few years--guaranteed!
The first Saturday in October offered cooler temperatures, and a steady rainfall most of the afternoon. The weather did not seem to deter patrons from attending the 8th Annual GH Street Faire. Nathan and Mickey were having fun in the Rotary booth when I stopped by. Carl, Phil and Jim, among others, helped sign up sponsors for Memorial Bricks at the Veteran's Park booth. According to Carl Melnick, approximately 80 memorial bricks have been sold so far. Carl's goal was to sell 100 bricks by this time. Time is running out to purchase a brick in your name or the name of a loved one.
Drew Frohlich represented our club at the Sierra Safari in Bishop. This annual event is capped off with a traditional trout breakfast on Sunday morning.
October will be the month when J.T. will unveil our much anticipated International Project. Therefore, all club members should attend every meeting in October.
Dianne Kartiala has graciously volunteered to host a fireside chat at her home on Wednesday October 22, 2008 at 7:00 p.m. All Rotarians and their spouses are invited to learn a little more of what Rotary is all about.

Presenting the award to Neil is current Club Secretary Carmelita O'Neil and Immediate Past President Drew Frohlich.
On Saturday, August 11, 2007 we had the honor of meeting with Rick King, Past Rotary International President, at the Odyssey Restaurant in Granada Hills. Rick was the keynote speaker of an excellent membership rally organized for the benefit of District 5260.
The event was well-attended and well-run. The ballroom was full, the program was very informative and entertaining (Rick even performed a song!) and we all left the event feeling energized and motivated.
Our own Jay Bolton was recognized by Rick as a new Rotarian. Welcome aboard Jay!
District events are great affairs. I would encourage all of you to attend these events whenever they are made available. You'll be glad you did.
Jay Bolton rounded out a great month of weekly programs for the Rotary Club of Granada Hills. Jay discussed the crucial aspects of reverse mortgages and how they've become an increasingly valuable financial planning tool. Earlier in the month we heard from Wynne Ritch, who focused on our nation's Founders and the 4th of July. Next up was Bruce Ackerman, President of the Economic Alliance of the San Fernando Valley. We also enjoyed hearing from our own Nathan Wolfstein and a member of his team, discussing the importance of being prepared to face a natural disaster. Special thanks go out to Janet Hartley, who acted as our Program Director for the month. Give her a pat on the back next time you see her - which should be soon, right Janet?
At our July 25th meeting, we were happy to add another banner to our podium. This time, given by a very special friend of the Granada Hills Rotary, Mr. Bill Shaw, Rotarian from Reno South. Bill has been a very frequent visitor to the club and is always welcome. Along with one of our newest members, Mickey Hurst, Bill worked extra hard at our recent Demotion Party in Malibu. Couldn't have done it without you Bill. Thanks again.
On July 5th, the Granada Hills Rotary was treated to an energetic and informative presentation by our own Wynne Ritch. The day after celebrating the anniversary of our country's independence, we were all able to reflect a bit deeper into the details behind this historic event. We often forget the great sacrifices made by our forefathers as they set out to change the world. We all learned a lot and were reminded how lucky we are to be living in the United States of America. Thanks Wynne!!

WE FED BREAKFAST TO HUNDREDS AT CANCER SOCIETY'S VALLEY RELAY FOR LIFE EVENT Crawling from a warm bed at 3:30AM to fix breakfast for a crowd is no small sign of dedication, but nothing to the 100's of people on the track in the midnight hours, who spent the entire night walking in relay teams to honor those that have known the pain and anxiety, and even a loss from cancer of a family member or friend. They walked to raise awareness and funds for a cure. It was to their dedication that the Rotary Club of Granada Hills rose to provide, cook and feed them after their long night's endeavor.
