Wow, time has passed and morning reports have been scarce over the last months. Do not despair! We have been meeting and greeting and sharing in Tuesday morning meetings. Today we were visited by Jacqueline Enns of the Big Brothers Big Sisters of Lloydminster to provide an update of activities and mentorships underway. In the last weeks we have had presentations from Midwest Victim Services, the Ukranian Culture Club of Lloydminster (a great overview of Ukranian dance and costumes)as well as fun and fellowship around the Christmas social and other times. We have a number of excellent presentations scheduled for January and beyond, so we will look forward to seeing everybody out in 2010.

Kerry Leckie, of Leckie and Associates visited with us at our meeting on November 10 to tell us about the firm that received this year's Integrity Award from the Chamber of Commerce. Our Club sponsors this award given at the annual Chamber Business Awards Dinner. Kerry told us about some of the history of the firm, some of the challenges faced and some of the characteristics that set Leckie and Associates apart. Congratulations to Kerry and his entire staff for being recognized with this award.

Well, we've had a couple of excellent speakers in November beginning with Georgina Altman sharing a vocatioanl on the 3rd. Georgina demonstrates a genuine Lloydminster community spirit with a family background and work history in this community. Georgina talks about "what she would like to do when she grows up," but until then, she continues to serve her community in the spirit and resolve that should typify any Rotarian. She is the Executive Director of the Lloydminster Region Health Foundation.

This week's speaker, Stan Bugiera provided a quick overview of Alberta's Apprenticeship and Industry Training programs. Alberta is a leader in technical training and its Journeyman certificates are recognized worldwide. It was also interesting to note that Alberta trains many more tradesmen than actually end up working in the province. Thanks to Stan for bringing us the update on trades and training this week.

A few quick updates on our recent morning events for those who have been away. This month we have welcomed Mark Alexander as a new club member. He joins us from the banking industry. We look forward to Mark's participation in the club and getting to know him in the weeks to come. We have also had a couple of interesting presentations from both Hi Mah and Michael Diachuk. A good time was had by all at the McCaw estate for the annual garage clean by Glenn and fun and fellowship by Doreen. A special congratulations to the 2009 champions of what could become an annual barbeque event. After some stiff competition, Cheryl prevailed as women's champion and Chris held off all challengers for the men's title in the first ever rubber boot throwing contest. Holding this title is a great privilege and challengers for next year should consider training carefully as Chris says he's already developing new techniques to launch an even further throw. (Careful though, you don't want to have to see Tom after training too aggressively.) Thank you to Glenn and Doreen for again hosting a wonderful Rotary fellowship event.

This morning's speaker managed to dole out some weighty legal advise, and all in 30 minutes or less. Don't bog down in the terminology - like probate, health directive, living will, power of attorney, inheritance tax or even land titles- just do your estate planning and do it now. That's the free advisee, and thanks to Scott for pinch hitting this morning with some important advise.

This morning's presentation by Neil Harris and Bob Day centred on stress, depression and suicide. Yes, these are weighty issues for the early morning, but important issues which were handled directly and infomatively by our presenters. Mr. Harris is the Lloydminster Coordinator for the Men At Risk program of Alberta Health Services. Mr. Day is a volunteer with the program. Both men shared about indicators and helpful responses to the stress and depression that can lead as far as suicide. Thanks to Neil and Bob for sharing with us, especially for the personal experiences shared which helped to illustrate the seriousness of these health issues.

Ethan and crew treated us to a rousing round of their own version of Jeopardy this morning. With everything from the "Eagle's Nest" to Al Capone, teams of scholarly, (okay, that's a stretch) Rotarians challenged for points in the morning's trivia challenge. Go Team Go, and much to Richard's dismay, the Green team came away with the most points - can anything good come in green?? Thanks to the July crew for a fun morning.

On July 7th we were visited by new District Governor Terry Drader and his wife Mary. Terry shared a bit of his history in Rotary, some reflections on the recent hostage taking in Nigeria involving a Rotarian from his home club and his overall enthusiasm for dreaming big. Terry reminded us that the dream to eradicate polio was a big dream in its time, which is now coming to fruition. He shared about the dream...   More...

Manager Mike Sidoryk visited our club this morning to provide us with an overview of upcoming Colonial Days (now in its 105th year) and an update on renovations and expansion plans.  "Your Brand of Fun" is this year's theme, and this will be highlighted throughout fair week.  There is an impressive lineup of entertainers and attractions - everything from knitting (Colonial Creations) to Nazareth, chuckwagons to chinchillas, and fireworks to french fries.  Make sure to take in your brand of fun sometime during fair week.  There are also...

President Aaron was awarded his Rotary gavel this morning in recognition of his steady, focused leadership over the last year and more.  President Aaron's goals of Club growth, engagement and fellowship over the last year have been realized through the collective effort of our Club's members under his faithful direction.  This morning we took a few minutes to recognize Aaron for his leadership and dedication to our morning club.  Incoming President Corin Berg now takes the gavel for the year ahead.

Ron Ror from the theatre attended this morning to tell us about the latest events at our very own "Jube".  Overall, Ron reported that the ongoing partnership between the City and Theatre is going very well.  There is also an exciting and diverse program line up scheduled all the way to February, 2010. Ron also highlighted some of the volunteer opportunities including using Vic Juba Theatre volunteer hours toward student and parent volunteer hours at school.  And all of us have the privilege of becoming a "friend", "chum", "pal", "buddy", or "best friend" by donation as well.  I hadn't realized that personal donations are matched by government grant so this is a good way to multiply the beneffit of your contribution to the community theatre.  Thanks to Ron for spending the morning with us and "lifting the curtain" on the latest at the Theatre.

It was a treat to listen to Terry's presentation this Tuesday morning as she shared about her career path to becoming the Health and Safety Director at R & D Plumbing.  Few can claim to have a personal exhibit in Canada's national history museum, nor can many claim to have been offered jobs becasue they participated in their husband's interview.  Terry claims both, along with a varied history of personal achievements in the food and service industries and a number of vollunteer organizations.  Thanks to Terry for sharing with us, and a big welcome to her as a relatively new member of Rotary.  Terry's personal and career examples of community service are a benefit to our club.

Yesterday's breakfast meeting featured reports from Jasper's District Conference.  While there was some inference that, "what happens in Jasper, stays in Jasper," the real report was encouraging and motivating to those who atended, and those who heard the enthusiasm and energy the Conference attendees conveyed.

Richard, Aaron, Cheryl, Corin, Alia and Olivier attended and reported on the fellowship of Rotarians, the masgnitude of world projects, the inspiration of the experience of others and the excitement of being with others who share the same passion for Rotary.

All were encouraged to mark their calendars for next year's conference in Drayton Valley.  (And, can someone please learn the four way test song, for real.)

Part of today's "fun & fellowship" morning included an auction to help the Rotaract Club raise some money for this year's Relay for Life.  On the auction block were four willing students - Travis, Justin, Patrick, and Cam, who wowed us with their potential value as labourers.  Thanks to Wayne and Corin who won the bids and together contributed $400.00 to the Relay through the Rotaract Club.  A note of thanks to Candace as well, for providing encouragement and direction to the students in Rotaract.

Aaron, Corin, Cheryl, and Olivier are attending the district conference this weekend in Jasper.  We'll hear from them next week when they give us their highlights from the weekend.

This morning we were updated on the "hand up" given in our community through Habitat's activities to date.  Since 1999, two homes have been completed and a third structure, a tri-plex is now under construction.  Habitat's President, Angela McKenzie shared about the organization's history and some of its accomplishments.  Executive Director Dennis Elko reminded us of the benefits received in our community through construction of affordable housing. He also shared some of the needs the organization has to effectively continue its work.

As construction is again underway, volunteer help is needed and appreciated - either individually or as a group.  Thank you to Angela and Dennis for visiting us this morning to profile Habitat's initiatives in Lloydminster.

The morning of October 21 featured a presentation by Rod Bargen, local director of the Canadian Federation of Independent Business.  Rod shared about the Federation's organization and activities as a voice for independent business owners in the public arena.  The Federation regularly provides information and feedback to provincial and national governments on issues arising from government policies and on initiatives of the Federation's members which governments need to be aware of.  Rod shared how in some cases governments are now seeking out the Federation's input on policy issues in the planning stages, which is an indication of the CFIB's credibility and value to its members.
