Serving crab dinners at Crabfest is our club's biggest fundraiser of the year and a lot of fun.

Make plans now to attend Rotary District 5100's annual District Conference, to be held this year at the impressive Salem Conference Center on May 1-3.   This inspiring event will include guest speakers on a variety of Rotary topics, including international service, club projects, membership, peace scholars, and the future of Rotary and Rotary clubs.

My favorite part of any District Conference is the Youth Exchange talent show.  Sometimes comical, frequently mind-blowing, this is a chance to see our District's robust youth program in action.  Often there are several young performers who will take your breath away with their talent and it's always rewarding to see how much these kids love and support each other.

Sign up at www.district5100.org or talk to me (David) about attending this year's conference.

Posted by DAVE PHILLIPS on Feb 13 2005

Rotary is all about building bridges and that is exactly what the Astoria Rotary Club is doing for its Centennial community service project.

The foot bridge at is an integral part of Camp Kiwanalong in Warrenton.  Built in 1986, the bridge spans a small lake with the largest bog in the state at one end.  Some 3,000 campers walk across every year and stand on the bridge while an instructor talks about the environment.  The bridge is now dilapidated and was unusable last year, forcing the camp to close an important hiking trail.

"Its going to make a big difference when we build the new bridge," said Project Chair Denny Holmes.

"Its going to be a swinging bridge that should last a long time," Holmes added.

The bridge will have an 80 foot span with 10 foot approaches at each end.  The cost will be about $10,000 and Rotarians will invest approximately 180 hours in the project, which is slated for completion at the end of April, 2005.  Mitch Mitchum, Director of Public Works in Astoria, has joined Holmes in spearheading the construction.

"Our club has been involved with this great camp in the past, putting roofs on the cabins and other things, but this will be wonderful because the kids will be able to use the trail again," Holmes concluded.

Rotarians should set aside each Saturday in April to work on this project.  The last Saturday in April will be a work day for the Crab Festival.
