Pure Water for the World

Lamin Manneh, World Service Chair of the Rotary Club of Edmond, presented a check for $3,900 to Nancy McDonald for "Pure Water for the World" at the November 17 meeting. The money will be used to build and install filters for households in El Paraiso Honduras. It is estimated that $6 will provide clean water for a family of 4 for 10 years using this simple but effective filter.
A sample filter was on display at the meeting.
This filter has a proven track record for being cost-effective, reliable and sustainable. Made of either concrete or plastic, the filter is filled with multiple grades of sand and gravel. Pollluted water is poured into the filter, passes through the layers of sand and gravel and clean water flows out the plastic pipe. The water is parasite free, clear in color , clean in taste and safe for human consumption.

Get Your Guts in Gear - Aug 7-9 2009

Edmonds community leaders welcomed the bicyclers for "Get Your Guts In Gear" annual ride benefiting Crones and Colitis research. This 3 day ride, takes place in only three locations the country, New York, Midwest and the Pacific Northwest. The ride started in Edmonds and continued to Mukilteo, Widby Island and returned to Edmonds. Riders come from all over the country to share their stories and experiences in living with the disease.

Carl.
"Welcome Frank," he boomed,shaking my hand,and then he looked at my wife standing beside me and

Warren Bradbury honored

Warren was honored at the noon meeting of the Rotary Club of Edmonds on May 12th for his 33 years of devotion to the principles of Rotary. Since 1976, Warren has been the chair of the Scholarship Committee which selects students to receive a scholarship for their first year college . To express its gratitude, the club has named its endowed scholarship at the Edmonds Community College, The Warren Bradberry Rotary Club of Edmonds Endowed Scholarship. ROTARY GRANTS SCHOLARSHIPS TO RABOUR STUDENTS

David Anstine, Chair of Rabuor Village Partners, accepted a scholarship check for $3,300 from the Rotary Club of Edmonds at their Tuesday Feb. 24 meeting. Five freshman high school students in Rabuor village will each receive a scholarship of $660 for room & board, tuition, uniforms, text books plus some travel money. These students, Brenda Okumu, Carolyne Wasuna, Linda Asenath, Victor Okwacho and Daniel Omondi, are total orphans who underwent a rigorous selection process before being chosen. The Rotary Club of Edmonds, in accordance with their Strategic Plan, has undertaken to support these students for their entire four year high school career. Plans are to receive yearly updates and letters from the students to assure that they are proceeding towards a successful completing of their education. We look forward to following these students over the next four years.

GEORGE WASHINGTON VISITS ROTARY

George Washington has come to Edmonds. Jim Hodges, internationally known impersonator and new member of the noon Rotary Club of Edmonds, gave a very timely and interesting presentation at a recent club meeting. With the strong emphasis on ethics these days Jim stressed how our first president was a wonderful example of an ethical person. As Jim said, George Washington really lived "Rotary's Four-Way Test" which has been translated into more than 100 languages. Rotary asks the following questions:
Of the things we think, say or do:
Is it the TRUTH?
Is it FAIR to all concerned?
Will it build GOODWILL and BETTER FRIENDSHIPS?
Will it be BENEFICIAL to all concerned?

Shelterhouse donation to be considered

Carol Kinney, President elect, has come up with proposal for disbursement of the Tsunami funds (raised in 2005) that are currently in the Edmonds Rotary Foundation funds. She suggests we donate the funds to ShelterBoxUSA. (www.Shelterboxusa.org.) and page 51 of the March 2009 Rotarian Magazine. These boxes are designed specifically for disaster relief and have been used all over the world. Launched in 2000 by Tom Henderson, a member of the Rotary Club of Helston-Lizard, England, each box contains a tent, a stove, a water purification kit, blankets, tools and other necessities to help a family of 10 survive 6 months. Each box costs $1,000. She points out that these boxes which are specifically designed for emergency disaster relief exemplify exactly the sort of help that donors had in mind when they gave to the Tsunami disaster relief.
She will ask the Club Board at its next meeting to request that the Edmonds Rotary Foundation donate these funds to Shelterbox USA. If approved, the Foundation Board will consider the request at their next board meeting.

Our speaker on 16 December was Dan Russo, VP Marketing and Communications of Horizon Air. His presentation concerned the proposal by Horizon Air to start passenger service from Paigne Field to Portland and Spokane.
