Rotary Club of Peterborough Past President Lloyd Graham spoke to the club about his participation in a Group Study Exchange in Africa. Lloyd had a wonderful slide presentation surrounding the works he and his committee were doing in Africa.

Rotary Dinner & Auction Friday Jan 15

The Rotary
Auction returned bigger & better than ever.The auction was held at The Peterborough Golf & Country Club, on the evening of Friday Jan 15. This years theme was The 100 km Dinner & Auction, promoting Peterborough & surrounding counties.Rotarians Eric Wilke, Kevin Duguay or Gord Fallen & their committee are to be congratulated on a very successful event. There were 186 people in attendance & bidding was brisk on the many Silent & Live Auction items. Rob Russland was in fine form as the auctioneer with Rotarians Peter Norris, Wendy Hill, & Kerri Davies in a supporting role promoting the Day at The Firehall Day with some tantallizing tidbits. Brian annouced at Rotary on Monday Jan 18 that he expected that the auction to raise over $22,000.

Donna Clarke from Homegrown Homes was the speaker today at the regular meeting of the Rotary Club of Peterborough.
The presentation spoke about how this program was made in Peterborough.
Donna Clarke recognized the Rotary Club's financial support for this over ten year old local housing program.

The Steinmillers visit Argentina

During a recent 3 week vacation to Argentina Eric & Donna were able to meet with the 3 Rotary Youth exchange students that they have hosted, Augustin Caralallo in 1994, Germana Pascal Marcius in 2006, & Lula Engles in 2002. Lloyd Grham served as the councellor for each student. Agustin is married to Veronica & has a 3 year old daughter Milagros. See Photos for further details.

The Rotary Club of Peterborough's
Xmas
meeting on Monday evening Dec 14 at the Peterborough Golf & Country Club. President Jim chaired the meeting with his right arm in a sling following shoulder surgery last Friday! Club Director Ken Seim & his committee are to be congratulated for organizing a superb evening of Rotary fellowship includuing door prizes.Ken played his trumpet for the singing of O Canada.A highlight of the evening was the surpise appearance of a pink gorilla with a Balloon a Gram package to celebrate Jenny Ingrams special birthday, courtesy of husband Alan. We were delighted to see Ada Lee thanks to Rotarian Stu Stovel's planning. Sgt at Arms Lloyd Graham dressed in his Scottish regalia managed to "levee" appropiate fines. Happy Bucks inluded the Steinmillers for their recent return from Argentina, see the article about the Rotary connection. We enjoyed a lovely buffet dinner featuring pork tenderloin & a delicious dessert table.Our guest speakers Rev Kevin Derry (Trinity United) & Pal S. Dosaj (Hindu faith) reminded us of the true meaning of the Christmas Spirit. See photos for further details.

Weekly Meeting of Nov. 16, 2009

This week Don Ford gave a presentation on the Access Centre.
The Access Centre Covers an area from Victoria Park Avenue in Toronto to Algonquin Park in the north.
It was amazing to note how many staff hours are involved in the care that is provided to the persons needing this assistance.
The meeting concluded at 1:40 p.m.

Weekly Meeting of November 9, 2009

Dr Dean Oliver, is the Director of Research and Exhibits at The Canadian War Museum in Ottawa. He was the guest speaker today at our annual Rotary Remembrance Meeting.
Dr. Oliver, a historan described how The Museum handles all the information and artifacts that come into their care.
He went on to explain how the Museum works. It was a very interesting presentation.
The Rotary Club had invited guests from the various veterans associations in Peterborough made up of members from the Army; Navy: Air Force Associations and the Merchant Marine.
The membership appreciated Dr. Oliver's attendance at the club and his interesting presentation. Many members stayed to speak with Dr. Oliver following the meeting.
A rousing standing ovation was offered to the invited veterans as well as the veterans who are members of the Rotary Club for their service to their country.
The meeting finished at 1:30 p.m.

This week our guest speaker was Bea Quarrie who spoke about the challenges that the Hungarian people faced in the 1950's for those who felt they needed to leave their country.
It was a moving presenatation of her life as a child with her family attempting to get out of Hungary.

The Rotary Club of Peterborough welcomes the Rotary District 3010 'Vocational Tour'.
The Rotary Vocational Tour from India was very interesting and informative.
They have been meeting in Niagara-On-The-Lake. We were very impressed with the businesses and professions our fellow Rotarians from India are involved in.
There were questions from some of our club members about the incredible changes that are taking place in India.
The picture is of the visting Rotarians and the head table.
The meeting adjourned at 1:40 p.m..

It was a great day but hard work as some members of the club volunteered their efforts.
The Rotary Club of Peterborough has a wonderful history with Camp Kawartha going back decades.

Carl Oake Swim-A-Thon

This was the first morning meeting of the 2010 Carl Oake Swim-a-Thon set for February 26, 2010.
It takes a lot of organization for this day and though it seems far off in the future it is really just around the cornor.

Adventures in Agriculture Oct 20 2009

Once again our club was a sponsor of this event which introduces Grade 8 students to the various sections of the county agriculture buisness.Rotarians under the leadership of Past President Paul Hartung assisted in the day's program by supervising the 5 "workshops" that the students rotated thru.Some of the workshops included the DNA Cluster at Trent U, crop issues, exploring agricultural machinery which included tractors with a GPS system to assist in crop sewing.The event took place in the Morrow Building on the Exhibition Grounds from 10:00 am to 2:00 pm. Five Counties Children Centre

Dave Adams was the guest speaker at our October 19th Rotary meeting. Dave reviewed the history of the Centre by reminding us that our club conceived & provided the financing to construct the centre which opened with 4 staff members in 1975.Rotarians Ed Myers, John Lowes,& Stu Stovel served on the committee that planned & raised the money to construct the Centre. Dave provided a brief description if the current programs offered by 5 Counties.See the Bulletin forfurther details.

We had our weekly meeting at the brand new Camp Kawartha
Environment Centre located in the Trent Nature Areas at Trent University
. We were honoured to be the first group to ever use the facility. Using innovative green architecture techniques, the
structure will be amongst the most sustainable in Canada.
We were greeted by Captain Climate, aka Glen Caradus, pictured at left, and got a good look at what makes the building so environmentally exciting.

Making music is a gift and we were given a real treat with a presentation and short concert by a small group
of musicians representing over 200 others in Peterborough's New Horizons group of bands. Spokesperson Lori Schuett, pictured on the left, gave us a lively discussion about the bands and hoped to recruit a few Rotarians to join.

As the summer slowly fades we were treated to a quiz about Rotary history by Sergeant-at-Arms Peter MacLoghlin and a timely presentation by our guest speaker,
Dr. Rosana Pellizzari, the medical officer of health for Peterborough City and County. Dr. Pellizzari, pictured at left, spoke about the preparations for a potential N1H1 pandemic and the possible ramifications for any business which may have numerous employees down with the flu. Her presentation was thought-provoking and her answers to questions very informative.

The highlight of the regular weekly meeting was the presentation to Lily Dart of her Paul Harris Fellowship award. Lily has raised over $8500. through her group Kids for All Kids and the money has built a school in Kenya. Presenter Lloyd Graham, seen with Lily in the photo, said that Lily may be youngest person to ever win the honour of a Paul Harris Award. The meeting closed with an interesting presentation by John Gillespie of Flying Colours.

Stoney Lake Cruise meeting - Aug 17

We had 48 Rotarians & their guests turn out for this special meeting on the Stoney Lake cruise ship.There was a severe thunderstorm on the drive to the lake but the bad weather cleared by the time we boarded the ship.This was strictly a fellowship meeting with no agenda, giving us a chance to relax, visit, take in the Stoney Lake ambience while enjoying cocktails followed by

The meeting got off on a challenging note as Sergeant-at-Arms Peter MacLoghlin quizzed the members on their abilities to use the Clubrunner website. A cheque for $20,082.50, which was raised through the Rotary Holiday Ford Golf Classic, was presented to the Five Counties Children's Centre. The meeting concluded with an interesting speech from our Assistant Deputy Governor, Susan Davidson, pictured at left. The next meeting of August 17 will be the evening Stoney Lake Cruise.

Festival of Lights

The Peterborough Rotary Club and the Kawartha Rotary Club are partnering with FOL to sell 50/50 tickets at the Festival of Lights at Little Lake this summer, starting on June 20, and continuing every Wednesday and Saturday until August 22nd. The money raised through the 50/50 draw goes back into the Festival of Lights and other events at Crary Park. For the full FOL lineup go to Festival of Lights. The meeting got off to a lively beginning when Sergeant at Arms Alan Ingram dusted off many of the members' skeletons in the closet and challenged each table to identify the Rotary member described in an often revealing anecdote from the past. Who would have known that some of our members had such interesting adventures in their past? The guest speaker was noted Peterborough lawyer Peter Lillico who gave a thought-provoking presentation on the topic The Cottage Conundrum: Keeping it in the Family. He is pictured to the left being thanked by Rotarian Jane Parr. There is no meeting next Monday, August 3 because of the Civic Holiday.

Weekly Rotary Meeting of July 20, 2009

It was a memorable and often tearful meeting as Manon, our French
exchange student, bade farewell and presented a series of photos
highlighting the many people she has met and the trips she has taken.
Manon was accompanied by the Kawartha Club's incoming exchange student,
Jessica Rodrigues from Brazil. Both of these exceptional young women
are a testament to the joys and spirit of the Rotary Youth Exchange
program. Manon and Jessica are pictured to the left. Al Harding, of
"Al on the Roof" thanked the Club for its support and he was followed
by Stu Harrison, General Manager of the Greater Peterborough Chamber of
Commerce, who gave a presentation on the benefits of the upcoming
harmonized provincial and federal sales taxes. All in all, a good meeting and one to be remembered.

President Jim Coyle was at the helm for his first regular meeting as
the Club's new president. To his credit, the meeting went without a
hitch. Alan Ingram as Sergeant at Arms stumped most of us with his
quiz about Canadian Prime Ministers and Parliamentarians and raked in
many loonies. Alan was also presented with his Rotarian of the Year
award and thanked the Club for the honour. Our guest speaker was Peter
Grummett, pictured at left, who suffered a grievous head injury about
ten years ago. He gave an inspiring talk about his traumatic injury
and his epic struggle to overcome what could have been a
life-destroying tragedy.

July 7th- Evening Turnover meeting

The final meeting for President Paul Hartung was celebrated in fine style. We had a large turnout for this special evening meeting,118 in total with over 50 guests, including many Rotary partners. Paul Harris awards were presented to four community leaders, Ed Arnold form the Examiner, Lily Dart a 12 year old student, Dr Don Harterre for his leadership in organizing the Family Health Teams, & Bill Bradburn representing the Bradburn family,one of Peterborough's more senior families.Ross Verner received a Paul Harris award from the club for his many years of service most notably as the club secretary for the past 5 years. The meeting concluded with President Paul Hartung handing the chain of office to Jim Coyle. President Jim then presented a Paul Harris award to Past President Paul.

Canada Day Meeting June 29 2009

& her committee organized yet another memorable Canada Day meeting. This annual meeting was started by Rotarian Isadore Black in the early 1990's. Students are asked to write an essay on what it means to be a Canadian. There are 2 divisions, Junior for grades 5 & 6, Senior for grades 7 & 8.The top 3 students in each division attend this Rotary meeting to read their essays & receive their prizes, bikes to the 1st place & ipods to the runnerups.The Black family donate the prizes in memory of Isadore. Our local politicains spoke to the students & presented the prizes to each student. The meeting ends with everyone having a piece of cake decorated with the Canadian flag. Jim generously donated half of the winnings to Manon to help her pay for the upcoming Rotary Maritmes trip & the other half back to the Festival

Speaker Dr Betsy McGregor

Rotarian Betsy Mcgregor gave an informative & entertaining presentation on the ehical issues involved in the cloning of animals, eg pigs, for use in our healthcare. For eg using the heart of a pig cloned to a specific person for transplant purposes. Betsy incuded her audience by having Rotarians at each table make decisions in regards to these issues.
