Lisa Evan introduced Chuck Anders, president of Strategic Initiatives, a consulting firm that specializes in using technology for strategic planning and issue resolution. He is a licensed PE, has been Assistant Director of Arizona DOT. He moved to AG in 1997 with wife, six dogs, five llamas, and numerous birds, cats, and goats.

Chuck worked with Lisa to develop questions about club activities and future direction for the club. The questions were asked and quickly individually answered by each club member. The answers were anonymous and immediately tabulated. The results of the voting clearly showed the direction the membership felt the club should move, what the membership felt worked best and worst regarding past club functions.

The process was painless and very productive, arguably the most productive 20 minutes the club has spent laying out future direction.

I was born in Detroit, Michigan and raised in Miami, Florida. While attending college my shorthand teacher told me I'd never make it in the business world so I left school and settled in Washington, D.C. where I worked for the Joint Commission on Correctional Manpower and Training and then a Court Management Study and finally as a bookkeeper for the largest patent law firm in the United States. After returning to Miami I did a little traveling and on a trip to Hong Kong in 1974, I met Manferd Jennings Shower, who lived in Grover City, California. Manferd and I married in 1975 in the front yard of the home I still occupy.   More...

One day, returning fresh from surfing, he hadn't even toweled off, made a visit to the old house and knocked on the door. This gracious lady opened the door, invited him into the foyer, listening to Chris explained why he was there, still dripping wet and in his bathing suit. It was a cordial, brief moment after which, embarrassed, he high tailed it back to his car. Anita said she doesn't remember the incident.

Ms. Mueller began her talk by relating 44 years ago her father took her to Washington DC where they visited the Capitol Senate chambers and she observed the vote for the 1964 Civil Rights Act, a historical event; and, now, just last night, Barrack Obama, the first black man elected to become the country's president. This event was accomplished smoothly, without riots, disorder in the streets, no gun fire and it speaks well for the unique democratic process that occurs in the United States of America. Over 550 kids participate. This event could have the Grover Beach Rotary Club brand attached to it for a small amount of money, $500-$750, and one day of work from Club volunteers. The Track meet is scheduled for May 17th, 9AM-2PM. We would not have to run it or set it up; just help at the event and spend some money. This event gets a large turnout of parents and families so it would be good publicity for the club. There was Club consensus to move forward. Good idea, Steve!

In a remote corner of NE Thailand, Good Shepherd Sisters established a school and work place for people and children affected by AIDS. The villages find children being raised by their grandparents, single parents with AIDS, or adopted into other families that have also been affected by AIDS. The Sisters have 75 children going to their school and have set up work and training opportunities where families are trained to make enough money to care for themselves and their children. If this didn't happen, many families would be forced to sell their children to the sex trade in Bangkok. Unscrupulous men offer money to the families to take their children to Bangkok. Often, these children end up in the sex trade in Bangkok or neighboring large cities. If these children or young adults return they are infected with AIDS.   More...

In 1981, the Good shepherd Sisters came to Nong Khai, in the northeast of Thailand. Having worked in Bangkok since 1965 with the women who migrated to the city from the rural areas, they understood the pressures on rural families in trying to satisfy their most basic needs. It was clear to the Sisters that these people, disadvantaged in so many ways, had no choices available to them. Lacking an education or training of any sort, employment opportunities were limited. To this day the Good Shepherd Sisters have been a source of empowerment, improving the quality of life for all involved.

Mike Balster introduced Roy Mueller recounting his education and experience in children's museums. Mueller was a founder of the education portion in the children's museum in Pasadena. He found an opportunity and a challenge when he accepted the job as the director of the SLO Children's Museum.

Mueller characterized the museum as a facility that serves the entire county. The new museum, which is expected to open the first of next year, will have three floors and over 8400 square feet located on the corner of Monterey and Nipomo. It is part of the city's cultural corridor leading to the Mission and on one side is the SanLuisCreek walk adjacent to nearby businesses.

I hope everyone in your club had a Happy Easter and thank you for all that you have done to try to help the Good Shepherd Sisters project.  I have only heard from the woman who bought the cards. We sure would love some assistance in buying the rice field. The total is $20,000 and I have raised a few thousand already, mostly my own donation. It is a life-sustaining project as you know and will last for years and years to come. The current residents, their children, and grandchildren will benefit from the additional field.

Chungsam, introduced by President Suellen, is a past 5240 District Governor and currently serves as chair of the RI Foundation Permanent Fund. Suellen described Chungsam as an experienced Rotarian who carries a great wealth of information. He said that the RI Board of Directors consist17 members serving a two-year term. The first director from District 5240 to serve on the Board was Sam Green, West Lake Valley. District 5240 has contributed significantly to the RI process. They were the first to use PERLS as a means to teach leadership to future club officers; and, they are the biggest contributors to the RI Foundation. In 1917, the RI President initiated the RI Foundation with a check in the amount of $26.50 contributed by the Kansas City, MO, club. The fund now exceeds $1.7 billion. Every dollar comes from Rotarians and friends who serve Rotary. The $1,000 Paul Harris donation to the Foundation is held in account for three years drawing interest before 100% of the donation is placed in the general fund for projects. Last year $80 million was contributed and three years later, it will all be spent.

Here I am in Nong Khai and it is certainly a miracle. It is truly amazing what love, friendship, laughter, sharing, the ability to work, being accepted, some needed medications, and good food can do to battle the challenges of HIV. Every other week, there is a gathering of 200 plus adults and children who have a fabulous day...and today was the day. I always feel so blessed to be here.   More...
