Steve Hale was our guest on Tuesday morning.  Steve is the Senior Area Manager for the U.S. Government's Small Business Administration.  Steve is a native of Dallas and most recently from Jacksonville, FL.  The SBA was created in 1953.  By fostering small business development in communities, it helps to generate tax revenue on local, state, and federal levels.  In our community, the SBA funds half of the Small Business Development Center at the community college.  Steve tries to get local banks to participate in certain SBA lending programs.  They can sometimes be hesitant to do these loans and Steve tries to make this possible for the banks and the small businesses.  The budget of the SBA is completely covered by their programs so our tax dollars don't really support the agency but the agency in the long run increases tax dollars available to the governements.  If you are looking for federal procurement monies, commercial loans for real estate, stimulus dollars, etc. call the local SBA and Steve may be able to help you out!

Steve Campbell, Area County Extension Agent, briefed the Club on Tuesday of the impact of regional drought and warming temperatures on the forest and shrubs of the SW including the White Mountains.  Steve has spent 20 years in this region observing the changing climate impact on the Ponderosa Pine forest and its retreat from lower elevations as the landscape dries out.  He notes that this landscape happened before around the year 1000 when drier conditions were prevalent and the ancient upland Pueblo cultures were forced to emigrate to river valleys in the SW to survive.

The McNary playground basketball court grant for which we applied has been accepted!  This is great news for our club and our RI service project.  We are in the process of getting our bank account number for the grant and getting all the different clubs to send their monies pledged to Rotary!  Thanks to all who have helped in this long endeavor, in particular all the clubs from Mexico, Casas Adobes and Sun Lakes which helped make this possible and to Hugh Grinell for helping hugely with this grant!

Veterinarian Dr. Carol Rowe addressed the Club last Tuesday on the challenges and rewards of her profession. She has practiced veterinary medicine at Blue Ridge Pet Hospital for seven years and now supervises the only certified Veterinary Hospital in the area. Her staff consists of two full-time vets, three assistants and herself. She pointed out that a veterinary physician spends a great deal of time responding to emergency calls after daytime hours since pets are often injured after dark.   More...

Rotarians conducted their Pancake Breakfast at Eddie's Country Store on Saturday, and a major event saw a record turnout. Over 170 people showed up to eat fresh pancakes and apple smoked sausage cooked to order on two grills. Rotarian Louie Poloni provided a trailer mounted grill which cooked perfect pancakes. A group of 10 volunteers provided service, cooking, and repartee for the many guests who came in between 8-10 AM. Eddies Store provided coffee and water and space to place tables. Agnes Poloni manned the cash register. Overall, the event raised nearly $1000 for scholarship funding for the next year.   More...

Ken Oakes, District Governor 5510 for 2009-2010 visited Show Low on his around the State tour on Monday-Tuesday last week. On Tuesday morning he addressed the Club to press his message of hands-on Rotary programs and revitalized membership. Linking the two ideas, Ken observed that Rotarians who stayed busy on projects in the community were more like to feel "needed" and more likely to remain active. He encouraged us to seek new members in our immediate community and to be the type of people that new members would like to be with weekly. Photo: John Lewis and Ken Oakes   More...

Vince Rabago, Arizona Assistant Attorney General, was our speaker at our regular Tuesday morning meeting, July 14th.  He percolated his job description through our caffeinated (or decaffed) brains with his COFFEE acronym.  C - works crime, cartels and consumer protection cases. O - Outreach programs.  F - forclosure (mortgage) shenanigans. F - Fraud to consumers like those pesky Pharmaceutical companies telling unsuspecting docs (not like me!) how to prescribe drugs off label.  E - education of kids on internet saftey (but don't ask Nick to be your My Space buddy, although Chief and I are Facebook friends) and E- elder abuse issues (I need my roof leak fixed - I hear Ryan's good with hammers - I only do drills!!!!)  Everybody seemed to really enjoy having Vince fill us in on all the finer aspects of riff-raff in AZ.  Keep your head in the game.  If it seems too good to be true, its probably a scam - Vince is your man!  Pres. John gave him a 4-way test coin just in case!

Dr. Scott Hastings, DO of Show Low, provided the Club with an overview of his clinical care program to provide medical services to the community. He provides basic services -- blood tests, sutures, physicals, exams -- at a low monthly rate to any patients who lack health insurance. He points out that 85% of most health care issues can be handled in a clinical environment, and that his health care service program is unique in the region. His cost of care is lower since this removes the health insurance middle man from direct physician care.   More...

The boys rose at 6 AM and underwent two hours of sprints, exercise, wrestling, and tug of war before breakfast. Once the meal was served at 9 AM, they were pretty hungry. Special thanks to John Lewis and John Stoner for donating watermelon and bananas; Jeff Smythe for providing ice chests and tables; Jonathan Hanridge for providing his truck; and to the Sun Lakers who donated the sausage. The leftover sausage was used that evening in the chili. The boys shook our hands 44 times in appreciation.

Swiss GSE Team Members toured the White Mountain region last week as guests of Rotary Clubs in Springerville, Snowflake, and White Mountains (Show Low). All five team members enjoyed the pines and cooler temperatures of the high country and met some 25 members of the combined clubs at Show Low City Park on Saturday afternoon for an outdoor picnic. A great time was had by all conversing with the Swiss team. The team will spend their last week in Arizona in the Phoenix area and fly back to Switzerland on June 6. Many thanks to the members who could attend the Saturday event and show the WM flag.

Phoenix reported a near record high temperature of 105 degrees on Friday, while Tucson topped 102 for the second day in a row. Heat in the South means Scorchbirds are coming North. Early sightings have included Gene, John, and Bob, with an occasional Louie. Keep your binoculars handy, because the migration North will be speeding up along with the record temps.

On April 28, ten Rotary Volunteers met along HWY 260 in Show Low to clean up the roadside of various discards. Several trash containers of beverage containers, fast food wrappers, miscellaneous items too numerous to mention were collected along the 1/4 mile of highway. Each Spring the Club meets to glean the roadway and members report somewhat lighter loads of litter this year, which they attribute to the economy. Salute to all eight Club members and two Scorchbirds that made the team a winner.

On Mar 26 Rob Butler received two stents in his heart after a stress test showed 90% blockage in left anterior artery of his heart. Butler was unaware that he had any issues, averaging 60 miles per week on a bike and lifting weights at the gym six days a week. He also worked all winter on Ski Patrol and Ski School at Sunrise. Lesson learned: get a periodic test to determine your heart health if you have any risk factors for arterial disease. These include elevated LDL cholesterol, high blood pressure, or a history of smoking. Diabetes is another complication to consider.   More...
