Shakoya Green, Behavioral Health Services
"re: Manhattan Beach Social Host ordinance"

Behavioral Health Services (BHS). BHS is a not-for-profit community-based health care organization providing substance abuse, mental health, drug-free transitional living, older adult services, HIV/AIDS education and prevention, and other related health services to the residents of Southern California. Behavioral Health Services, Inc. dba NCADD South Bay was funded under a Los Angeles County substance abuse prevention contract to deliver services in Manhattan Beach with the primary goal being the reduction of underage drinking and marijuana use. Our main focus is to raise public awareness and support for Manhattan Beach’s Social Host Ordinance and partner with other service organizations throughout the community in order to ensure that families have the greatest opportunity to access resources and respond to parent questions about youth substance use issues. Manhattan Beach has been a wonderful example of a community caring about the health of their kids.

We will be presenting data collected from the community from surveys, focus groups, key informant interviews on the extent of underage drinking by youth 12-17 across Beach cities. What are the contributing factors such as retail access to alcohol by minors. We will focus on the following:

How you can use your existing Social Host ordinance can help decrease underage drinking in Manhattan Beach.

Ara Norwood, information entrepreneur
"Six Great Men: Crafting the U.S. Constitution"

Six Great Men: Crafting the U.S. Constitution.  Extensive and unique research to discover the individual characteristics as well as the idiosyncrasies of each of these important leaders to bring about a better understanding of the dynamics of that era that lead to the establishment of our government. Importantly also, the very subject of the presentation invariable brings into issue sensitive political and religious views, however, effectively and diplomatically addressing these issues in a non-controversial, objective fashion.

UCLA Head Football Coach Jim Mora
"Football, UCLA football and his foundation, "

We have the pleasure of having South Bay resident UCLA Head Football Coach Jim Mora speak to us on June 24th.

In his first year as head coach, Mora guided the Bruins to the 2012 South Division Championship of the Pac-12 Conference and matched the school-record for wins by a first-year coach, with nine. The Bruins, who played in the Holiday Bowl, set numerous offensive records and defensive records during the course of the season.

Mora, a former NFC Coach of the Year, came to UCLA after spending part of 2010 and most of 2011 as an analyst and contributor for the NFL Network and the NFL on FOX. He brought 25 years of NFL coaching acumen with him to UCLA, including four years of NFL head coaching experience while at the helm of the Atlanta Falcons (2004-06) and the Seattle Seahawks (2009).

Outside of his role as a coach and then, broadcaster, Mora and his wife, Shannon, founded the Jim Mora Count on Me Foundation in 2005, which strives to support children in need by affording them the opportunity to realize their potential and dreams, help create more stability in their lives, support advocacy for children, and support channels that allow children to have a voice.
