BSWH Rotary Hosts District Scholarship Luncheon
ImageBellaire / Southwest Rotary hosted the District's 2012 special awards luncheon at which DG Rhonda Walls recognized winners of our area-wide writing competition for graduating seniors who are members of InterAct clubs at area high schools. Kevin Leba of Cypress Woods High School was named top essayist, receiving a $2000 college scholarship for his efforts. Leba’s essay explored how today’s business and political practices would benefit from use of Rotary’s 4-way test of ethical behavior: Is it the truth? Will it build goodwill and better friendships? Is it fair to all concerned? Will it be beneficial to all concerned?  Micaela Canales of Quest Early College High School received the second place scholarship of $1000, and Ashley Pendergrass of Katy High School took third place, receiving a $500 scholarship.
ImageServing on the 2012 judges’ panel with District Chairperson Nan Wagoner (BSWH club) and DG Rhonda (Katy club) were DGE Chris Schneider (Memorial Spring Branch Rotary), PDG Sunny Sharma (Ft Bend Rotary), Tommie Buscemi (Kingwood Rotary), Jon McKinnie (Space Center Rotary), and Carmen Cuneo (Hermann Park Rotary). Honorees received framed certificates and gifts after the scholarship announcements, then read their winning essays. The contest promotes Rotary’s literacy goals, as well as ethical values, and demonstrates Rotary’s commitment to youth by helping seniors with college expenses. We enjoyed welcoming many guests, including the parents of two of the winnners, Ashley Pendergrass (top photo, left) and Kevin Leba (right).
