Dr. Rajiv Agarwal not only gave life-saving tips to Rotarians during his Keynote Address but also donated a heart scan for our club drawing (won by Byron Holloway). Agarwal is pictured during his presentation (left) and being honored by President Nan Wagoner with a book donated in his name to the YMCA (right).
A few surprising factoids from Dr. Agarwal's presentation: 17% of heart attacks are associated with chemical reactions from calcium deposits - calcium cannot be removed, but the associated reactions can be aggressively treated & save your life; new heart-scanning technology can detect calcium deposits that hide from traditional heart exam techniques; aspirin on-hand for a heart attack is unhelpful unless chewed or crushed; some CPR, even if incorrectly done, is better than no CPR at all; 120/80 no longer is the blood pressure standard - individual BP should be as low as can be tolerated without feeling bad; walking only 30 minutes/day will permit weight loss at a steady, beneficial rate; more fatal heart attacks occur in people with 50% blockage than with 80-90% blockages because higher blockage levels are more stable.
