At our regular meeting on Wednesday, April 4th, Laura Lopilato gave a very enlightening presentation about the myriad of services provided by SCO Family of Services to New York's most vulnerable – those
striving to overcome the devastating impact of poverty, neglect, abuse,
or developmental and mental challenges.

Laura is the Program Support Manager at the Madonna Heights facility in Dix Hills, NY. She explained that the SCO Family of Services has been providing shelter and care to people in need for more than a century. Today, SCO Family of Services is the largest non-profit service organization of its type in New York State, providing a comprehensive array of services to children and families throughout New York City and Long Island. Their programs include help for the homeless and those with developmental disabilities, family counseling and community services, foster care and adoption, early childhood and youth programs, mental health services, special schools and public school programs.
Laura elaborated on the help provided for adolescent girls, women and families at Madonna Heights, including their Residential Treatment and Treatment Facility, the Madonna Heights School and Day School, Therapudic Arts Program, "Morning Star" Recovery Programs, "Gatehouse" Shelters, and Family Service Clinic. She also described some of the off-campus services provided throughout Long Island for homeless women and adolescents, some with children.
The bulk of their funding comes from government sources and some grants, but like elsewhere, there have been severe budget cuts in the last few years. SCO Family of Services holds a number of information and fund-raising events during the year. For more information, log onto their website: sco.org/familyofservices.
