| The Joy of Being a Rotarian by Jenny Oscar ( Ph. 52614181)
I am very grateful to Jason Trethowan for this opportunity to reflect on the recent step forward for Young People's Health and Wellbeing in my local area- Postcode 3216.
I have long enjoyed working with Young People in my Practice- the challenging and the rewarding bits, hence I have built up a level of frustration at the Social and System difficulties, along with the lack of infrastructure to support the best efforts of Schools in the area.
Clockwork, and Jigsaw are wonderful assets, but have perhaps not been as accessible by our local young people due to transport limitations, and time restraints. Teachers, Student Welfare Coordinators , School Nurses and the various other School Support networks are overloaded. I have wondered for a long time what extra support could benefit our local area.
The next 12 months may help define this need.
Toni Van Hammond spoke at my Rotary Club- Belmont, and her passion, the recognition of need and her vision (which fitted with 'Make Dreams Real'- this years' Rotary theme,) were taken on board. The Club members responded positively, and Youth Mental Health voted as a major priority for 2009 and 2010.
The Rotary Club of Belmont Board has voted to support headspace Barwon, by guaranteeing $30,000 to employ a Youth Worker, for 2 days a week for 1 year, inclusive of School holidays, to support the '3216' youth, within the 4 Secondary campuses.
Local young people will have an input- via the new headspace Youth Worker, and existing youth structures, to promote and assist in youth health strategies in our local'3216' area. Statistical information will be obtained, which can be used to demonstrate the need and attract Government funding in future.
Rotary has given me an amazing opportunity to connect with so many people, of various Vocations, with a desire to assist through Service to others, maintain high ethical standards, and create avenues of Goodwill.
I have wondered if my Medical Collegues, their Administrative, Nursing and Allied staff members have ever been invited to think about assisting Rotary?
Membership is one avenue, but so many more options are available.
â?Ã'¢ Polio eradication- Financial support ; by a contribution to the Rotary Foundation Trust ,to assist the Bill Gates Foundation challenge.
â?Ã'¢ Rotary Oceanic Medical Aid for Children (ROMAC) or Interplast
â?Ã'¢ RAM - Rotarians against Malaria send impregnated mossie nets to at risk areas. (Drop in empty Ink/Toner cartridges to any Bendigo Bank branches)
â?Ã'¢ Volunteer Project workers travel and work in underprivileged Communities.
â?Ã'¢ DIK @ Osbourne House, the major drop off site for Donations in Kind, whereby our unwanted goods are sent to disadvantaged overseas communities.
â?Ã'¢ Rotary Shelter boxes have been supplied in all recent natural disasters, including to Kinglake this year. ($1200 per shelter box)
â?Ã'¢ Support for Rotary Youth Programs- Youth Exchange, National Youth Science Program, Leadership Training, including RYLA and Rotaract after completing secondary educationl, and many Vocational opportunities.
Any financial contribution is Tax Deductible, and can be designated
