Trivial pursuits by members of the Rotary Club of Downtown Gainesville during the past year earned real dollars for four Gainesville non-profits.

"Each week, members voluntarily surrender pocket and purse change to our Trivia Basket," explained outgoing President Destani Shadrick. "Over the past 12 months, more than $500 in change accumulated, enough to make a significant donation to four area non-profit projects."

Ed Book, Chief of Police at Santa Fe College, asks trivia questions at each Wednesday noon meeting of the club at Villa East in downtown Gainesville. Club members -- each of whom chooses a favorite charity -- get points for every correct answer. Total points for 12 months determine the winners.

This year's overall club trivia winner was Becky Hunt, whose charity, Shands at UF's Long-Term Patient Housing program, was presented a check for $250, accepted by Jean Osbrach, Family Services specialist, and Jon Thomas, chairman of the board for the housing program.

Runners-up checks for $100 were given to charities designated by incoming President Perry Pursell (Children's Miracle Network, represented by Sarah Franz); Bob Robar (Hands 2 Love, represented by Ruthie Dell), and Rob Oglesby (Success by Six, represented by Mona Gil de Gibaja).
