PDG Chuck Anderson shares his photos and experience in Puerto Rico
(REDONDO BEACH) May 10, 2012 PDG Chuck Anderson was our luncheon speaker today. He gave a rousing presentation – including 75 slide Power Point presentation – of the recent District 5280 trip to Puerto Rico. Altogether more than 100 Rotarians and spouses from District 5280 went on the trip. Three members of our club went on the trip: Chuck, Galina Gillman and Jim Chen. Contributions from the Redondo Beach Rotary Club aided in the rehabilitation the Camuy Hatillo Women’s Center which provides vocational training and counseling to women in old San Juan. “Altogether, the district participated in 13 projects for a total of $213,427,” Anderson said.

Turns out it was a great meeting for Chuck’s presentation.  Altogether, we had 10 visiting Rotarians and guests  in attendance. Visiting Rotarians included Roger Cox from the Manhattan Beach Rotary Club and Rob Crowholm from the Lockport (IL) Rotary Club.  Inductee Capt. Marcelo Goncalves from the Redondo Beach Salvation Army was making his third visit together with his wife Odila.

Other guests included Fernando Mata and Joe Hoffman of the Redondo Beach Police Department, Jonathan Macias, a special guest of Gayle Albin-Bailey, Walt Hindenlang, a guest of PDG Chuck Anderson, and Karina Garcia, a special guest of President Steve Scerra.   Karina had volunteered at last weekend’s club rummage sale.

Police Officer of the Year: Det. Fernando Mata with Bill Gard

Member Bill Gard introduced Det. Fernando Mata, the club’s selection for the 2011-12 Officer of the Year.  Mata has served the community of Redondo Beach for nearly three decades and is a nationally recognized detective.  Congratulations Det. Mata.  He was accompanied to the club ceremony by his supervisor, Joe Hoffman.

President Steve gave an update on last weekend’s club rummage sale.  “We raised in excess of $3,000 and expect to top $5,000 when all revenues come in,”  he said.  Twenty members of the club participated in the daylong event held at a parking lot of the Redondo Union High School.

Dinger or Happy Buck Fines:  Dingemaster Bradshaw was not in attendance today so Prez Steve handled the duties.  Colette Paul and Terry Bichlmeier contributed and bragged a bit today.

Our speaker next week:  Ellen Matsumoto, a defense appeals attorney.

Raffle:  Steve Aspel got lucky today.  He drew the green and white marble and pocketed a little over $300.  Next week we start over again.

Prez Steve ended the meeting at 1:35 p.m. with this quote from Henry Ford: “Coming together is a beginning; keeping together is progress; working together is success.”
At a post-club meeting of the Past President’s Council, club President Scerra undertook the task of gathering the names of past recipients of the club’s Rotarian of the Year Award.  The list will be posted to the club’s Web site.
