Our ShelterBox was deployed to the islands of Turks & Caicos in the Carribean to aid families that survived Tropical Storm Fay and hurricans Gustav, Hanna and Ike. An American ShelterBox Response Team returned from the islands on Oct. 6th after successfully distributing 200 boxes, ours included.
According to the team, Grand Turk and Salt Cay islands were the worst affected. With more than 80% of the buildings severly damaged on Grand Turk, this was the area that the team focused on for distribution of ShelterBoxes. Recipients' homes had been reduced to piles of debris. Some had made makeshift shelts from wooden pallets.
The team reported that ShelterBox was the first aid agency to deliver aid of this type to Salt Cay. The team was assisted by members of the Rotary Club of Provo Island, whose local knowledge proved invaluable.
