Benton Harbor Public Safety is Leading the Way
Editor: Elliott, Bob

Click to view image in actual size Roger Lange, director of public safety, is proud of the city's progress in development of the public safety department.  In fact, Benton Harbor is serving as a model for other areas that hope to improve services while lowering costs. Director Lange has one fire fighter on duty 24/7 responding to calls but he is joined at the scene by public safety officers trained in fire fighting methods.  There have only been three instances where fire support was called in from neighboring communities. Two new elements have been the keys to success: use of part time officers and paid-on-call fire fighters.  They provide the flexibility to respond to needs without having full time people on duty. The result is more patrol cars on the street during the critical hours of the day and lower costs.

Benton Harbor is undergoing a change for the good, said chief Lange.  He's looking forward to the PGA event which will show case the city.  Of course he's canceled all vacations and placed everyone on standby during the tournament.  North Shore Drive and  Klock Road will be closed and M-63 will be down to one lane, with reduced speeds so the golfers and visitors can move around safely.
