| Putting the Kids in Control |

Joyce Shellito, executive director for Calling All Colors, leads an organization with the simple goal of bringing kids together who would be unlikely to meet one another. Classes from Benton Harbor meet with similar classes from either St. Joseph or Lakeshore. Grades 1, 2 and 4 meet twice a year and then continue as pen pals until the next time they meet. Trained facilitators use games, fun activities and discussion to lower barriers between students. An annual picnic at Kiwanis Park has become a great way for students and families to renew and expand their friendships. The smiling faces and new friendships are demonstrations of the effectiveness of the program .
