Today's speaker was Jim Sartoris former head football coach at Glendale Community College and now Commissioner of the Southern California Football Association. Jim was a former star athlete at GCC and then went to University of Washington on a football athletic scholarship.
After graduation, he returned to GCC as an assistant coach and then the
head football coach at GCC for a number of years. He commented that
there are over a 100 junior colleges in California
who have educated over 1.5 million students in the last 60 years. The
student athletes need to meet the same academic requirements at the
four year NCAA schools, and 85% of the GCC student athletes transfer to
a four year college after completion of their two year eligibility at
the JC level. He emphasized that his student athletes played with class
and showed sportsmanship and manners in the classroom as well treating
their opponents with respect on the athletic field.
