Guide Dogs of America at our Aug 2 Meeting
Editor: Galleher, Donald

Click to view image in actual size There isn’t a better Rotary meeting than when the President gets to announce a brand new member of the Paul Harris Rotary Fellowship.  Such was the case last Thursday when Kirby Higashi reached the $1,000 mile in his giving.  Congratulations Kirby, we are most grateful for all you do for Rotary.

Vicki Raangsuebsin is a great sport.  She mentioned to song leader Don Galleher that she only knew one song -- “God Bless America” and that she learned it at Rotary. She said she sang it to her daughter every night. Don invited her to come up front and join him in a rendition of said song and that brought a tear to every eye in the room.  It’s amazing the things Rotary does for people.
I have to admit I wasn’t sure if I would be up to the program on Thursday.  Just a couple of weeks ago, Mary and I had to put down our beautiful black Lab.  But, it turned out that Linda Relyea and her black lab Sagan (in training) were just what the doctor ordered. The story of “Guide Dogs of America” is truly an inspirational story of love, hard work and hope for blind people around the world.  And, the best part was that I got to give Sagan a great big hug at the end of the program.

Guide Dogs of America is dedicated to providing guide dogs and instruction in their use, free of charge, to blind and visually impaired men and women from the United States and Canada.  With the help of a guide dog, they can continue to pursue their goals with increased mobility and independence.

See you next meeting.
