Duffel Bag Project
The Community Service Committee is spearheading a "duffel bag project" for foster kids, many of whom are moved to and from homes quickly, and end up carrying their belongings in black trash bags.
Peggy Hayes of the Clark County Department of Social Services (you may remember her as a speaker from last fall) has asked us to help gather new and used duffel bags of all sizes. She specified a preference for duffel bags, but only because they are easier to store, both for her office and for the foster kids-- suitcases are also OK! We will be collecting bags at our club meetings in January and February.
Benefit Concert
Another initiative of the Community Service Committee is to help with a benefit concert on February 26th. Rachael Phelan from The Wild Hair in Camas is putting together a benefit concert and auction for Belle Mathieu from A Twist on Time. As some of you may know, she suffered a brain stem stroke on New Year’s Eve, which left her paralyzed in one leg and other medical complications have developed. We have been told that she is underinsured and is in great need of help. The plan is for all proceeds from this benefit to go towards her ongoing medical care.
C-W Rotary has agreed to step up and help. We are asking members for items or cash donations for the auction event, as well as volunteers to help out that evening. We are short on time, so please act now!
5th Grade Girls Program
The 5th grade girls program will start March 14. Linda Haines is collecting hotel toiletries for the girls. Women outside of Rotary who might enjoy participating or helping with the program are very welcome to do so, please contact Linda. She would like to get 3-4 more people involved. |
