Affirming the Significance of Business
|
Tim Weinhold, who works with President Elect Keith Carpenter at Epic Life Church, is originally from Wisconsin. He moved to Boston to go to school, and stayed for 40 years. Tim moved to Seattle about 18 months ago for the sake of his aging mother. He says he is an entrepreneur who has run many businesses, and has experienced the ups and downs that a small business owner is well aware of.
Tim presented his presentation of what God's view of business is. His quote, "The ability to create wealth isn't a human invention, it is given by a creator" summed up his talk well. Tim posited that a business is to serve customers, of course, but also to serve the empoyees of that business as well as the rest of the community, often in the shape of the poor.

With Bible quotes and some good examples, Tim described how employee-owned businesses can be successful. Tim said, "If god intends business to be a blessing, who gets blessed?" Workers can share in the harvest as well as a salary.
Some examples Tim gave were McKay Nursery in Wisconsin, Beacon Industries in Georgia, Thane Boatworks in Everett, and Silver Cup Coffee Company in Seattle, who send a portion of coffee sales to World Vision.
Tim's vision of the role of business in society looks a lot like what Rotary believes. Thanks for the talk, Tim! |
