| As we near the 39th edition of the Concours
d’Elegance, it would be good to reflect on the fact that most true Concours are
full-weekend events (the Pebble Beach Concours, generally recognized as the
leading Concours in the United
States, hosts several events, including
several car auctions, tours, and other classic-car related activities). Our Concours is no different. The Concours weekend begins on Friday evening,
when the stage backdrop is erected. The
Concours Board has just completed refurbishing the stage backdrop and it will
look great this year.
Then, on Saturday morning, the Car Spotting teams get to
work on setting up the display areas, and of course the fence crew starts
erecting the orange perimeter fence around the Pacific University
campus. Many other activities around
campus are also completed on Saturday so that we can have a smooth start to the
Concours on Sunday morning. Shortly thereafter, our renowned Lake Tour
gets started. Over the past several
years, this event has grown in size and generally features between 30 and 40 of
our entries in a wonderful tour of Washington
County wineries and of course Hagg Lake.
Once the Tour is concluded, our Evening of Elegance
car-owners dinner commences. This event
is a key part of our weekend celebration of classic automobiles. Many of our car owners attend this dinner and
it is great to get as many Rotarians as possible to attend this dinner to greet
these folks, some of which traveled a long distance to help us raise funds for
deserving local students and charities.
Last year, we had car owners from as far away as Canada at the
dinner. Over the years, this event has
traveled from place to place. For
several years, it was held on the streets of downtown Forest Grove, then for
several years it was held at Pumpkin Ridge Country Club and at the
Reserve. Last year, the event was moved
to the campus of Pacific
University, where an
outdoor setting, a perfect evening, and a display of some of the classic cars
to be displayed the next day at the Concours produced one of the best Evenings
of Elegance in many years. It is my hope
that we will again have a great turnout of Rotarians at this event this year.
Sunday, of course, is Concours Day. More to come on that in next week’s
Rototeller!
