The Rotary Club of Motijheel in Bangladesh, in partnership with the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise and a matching grant from The Rotary Foundation, has provided three deliveries totaling 1,650 wheelchairs to that country’s needy handicapped. An excerpt from the “Daily Sun” newspaper of Bangladesh, Abdul Hasnat, District Governor of Rotary International Bangladesh said, “The number of physically challenged people is increasing day by day with the growing number of road accidents. As a result, they find it difficult to move on their own and become a burden of our society.”
Luz Maria Ortiz-Smith, PDG of the Rotary Club of Santa Barbara Sunrise states, “We have sent three wheelchair containers to Bangladesh (550 wheelchairs each). The last container was last Rotary year. Each time the Prime Minister is invited to participate in the distribution. The wheelchairs are distributed to individual Clubs so people from different regions in the district can benefit from the project. In Bangkok Janet (Napier) and Connard (Hogan), David and Michelle (Velarde) and E Russell (Smith) and I met with Shakur and Anthony (incoming club president of our partner club RC of Motijheel). They expressed great interest in exploring a new project as we enter Future Vision in 2013-2014.”
