Reporter's Notes - June 12, 2012
Editor: Robert Ming

Click to view image in actual size President Barbara was prompt as usual and called the meeting to order at 12:30 sharp.  Yours truly led the pledge, reminding our Rotarians and guests that those colors stand for freedom throughout the world and that we should never take for granted the price that has been paid by so many to preserve those freedoms.  As if by cue, Robie Robeson led us in a rounding rendition of America the Beautiful, and there may have even been some harmony on occasion.  Don Blake inspired us by telling the riveting story of the first living recipient of the Medal of Honor recipient in decades - Staff Sergeant Salvatore Giunta - and the amazing things he did to earn it.  One man truly can make a difference!

Bailey Heart is the principal for the day at Bergeson Elementary with Barbara. Mark Montgomery introduced Linda Hess, Assistant Governor from the Dana Point Sunrise club to invite us to the lobster fest, and introduced his beautiful mother Dorothy.

Bill Leber announced the Veterans Memorial plaque at the Senior Center.  Thursday at 10 am.  Bill Nguyen mentioned the joint board meeting On Thursday, June 21, at 4:30. Party coming up, the Country Fair event at Stephanie Otto's house.  $35-$40 cost. Come and support.

Vito announced the dinner club and made sure we had all checked with their spouses. Vito also had to forcibly remove the red badges from Eve Beck and Michael Maw and gave them blue ones.

David Weiss was the Sgt at Arms and celebrated with Ellen Fine for her anniversary. Eve celebrated that Miles and Esther joined her and Michael to celebrate their anniversary.  Betsy bought tickets for the Lobster Fest.  Ed Gowen gave happy bucks, and offered to sit on Betsy's lap, to celebrate Bob Sinclair and his memorial service. Ken Montgomery celebrated his 23rd wedding anniversary, and gave us a construction update about the SDG&E undergrounding project on Golden Lantern.

Today's announcements and happy bucks were filled with rave reviews of our recent supper club Eve Beck and Michael Maw.  Miles Sterling was especially happy that they didn't need to call the fire department since dinner was smoked salmon cooked on wood planks that did a little more than just smoke!  Miles also gave extra happy and scared bucks for his grandson doing work in the back country of Liberia with the Peace Corps.  Harry Cheshire also gave happy bucks for the supper club, and for the chauffeur job that Barbara gave him.  Ken Tokash gave happy bucks for the 17 year old from Santa Margarita High School that is playing with the masters.  Jeannette Krembas gave happy bucks for the annual volunteer dinner and what a wonderful group of volunteers we have in the city.  Jan Alicide gave happy bucks for her trip to New York and her mom turning 60, and was happy to return to work, which felt like a vacation after the fun and exhausting trip.

Bill Leber gave happy bucks for his motorcycle ride from Half Moon Bay and Yosemite, 1700 miles over 5 days.  Eve Beck gave happy bucks for the time she spent on the scholarship committee and the wonderful students who applied and won scholarships.

Ron Neuhoff gave some auction bucks about a gift he bought at the auction - seats to hear the Pacific Symphony - and said that the tickets were amazing and the box circle was incredible.

Bruce Birkeland chaired the scholarship committee and introduced the committee members:  David Weiss, Bill Nguyen, Randy Steele and Eve Beck, and recognized his wife Sharon, who held the whole process together this year.  They interviewed the finalists and made their decisions among excellent candidates.  The winners were Jessica Densmore, Lexi Smith, Joe Getz, Serene Jneid (who won the Bob Margolis memorial scholarship),  Megan McKee, Juliette Virzi and Catherine WongBruce reminded the students of how proud we are of them, and that we will be watching their futures unfold and would love to have them return and tell us how things are going.  We hope all our student scholarship winners will continue in their volunteerism, and remember the service above self motto of Rotary.

Each student introduced themselves and told us about their college selections, major, and where they expect to be 10 years from now.  All had amazing plans.

President Barbara invited all the parents and guests to join our club, and closed the meeting by sending Glenn Shaffer and Robie Robeson home with a bottle each.  Another great day at Rotary!
