WALTHAM --- Three employees of Marcou Jewelers caught a man who attempted to steal two diamonds from the Moody Street business this afternoon.

According to owner Bob Marcou, a man asked to look at two diamonds. He grabbed them out of his daughter's hands and ran out of the store. He and his daughter, Melanie Marcou, as well as his sister, Marilyn Burke, chased the man down Moody Street to Gordon Street, where a car was waiting for the man. Burke went back to the store before the man was caught as the store are unattended.

Bob pulled the man out of the getaway car, which dragged the two before the suspect let go. The car took off.

"When he tried to get into the car it gave me time to grab him and pull him out," said Marcou. "He kind of gave up (when the car took off).

"He said he is a drug addict and if I would let him go."

Marcou said that Melanie was helping the man who came in and asked to see "the biggest diamond" they had. He then asked to see another "to compare the two." Before Melanie had a chance to hand him the second diamond he grabbed it from her and ran out of the store.

"Grab and runs happen, especially now in more desperate times," Marcou said. "You have to let them see (what they ask for). We can't make judgments on people."

Marcou said that as they were chasing after the man, who was taken to Newton-Wellesley Hospital after sustaining injuries during the scuffle, Melanie was yelling, "Someone stop that man; give me my diamonds back." He said that many people came to help, trying to block the man with their car, or helping to hold him as police responded.

Waltham Police has not compiled a report yet.
