On short notice Stuart put together a talk about the Texas Windstorm Insurance Pool. The Texas Windstorm program originated in the early 1970's when most large insurance companies refused to write windstorm insurance in Texas. It was formed as a non-profit organization sponsored by the State of Texas. Because of the recent huge loses from Hurricane Ike it was bankrupted but has been replentished.
Stuart talked about what home and business owners can do to reduce their potential losses from windstorms. Anything that can prevent the "envelope" of the house to be breached will reduce damage. Such simple things as running a bead of "liquid nails" along the juction of the rafters and roof can double the wind speed rating of the roof. Beefing up the garage doors can also be helpful. We can expect building codes to be strengthend.
Stuart promised to bring some handouts describing the things a home owner can do reduce their risk.
