Every year, the state of Texas removes thousands of children from their homes because of abuse or neglect. These victimized children are drawn into an overburdened child welfare system that is hard pressed to address their individual needs. CASA, Court Appointed Special Advocates™ is a nonprofit organization that trains and supports volunteers to work with these children in their journey to a safe, permanent home.
The Texas CASA Mission & Purpose
Texas CASA advocates for abused and neglected children in the court system through the development, growth and support of local CASA programs statewide. Texas CASA provides training, funding, program and technical assistance to all existing CASA programs and works to bring CASA services to every child in Texas. CASAs are appointed by judges to help the courts deal with the overwhelmingly difficult and costly increase in child abuse cases. The CASA volunteer is an independent voice for a child, assuring that their needs are met.
In fiscal year 2007, 4,928 CASA volunteers advocated for the best interests of 20,509 abused and neglected children in foster care statewide. Currently, there are 68 local CASA programs serving 202 counties. This network of community volunteers provides advocacy and support services for some of the most vulnerable residents of the state. Texas CASA is working to bring services to additional children as quickly as possible.
How Can You Help?
Texas CASA's goal is to ensure that every child in Texas who needs a CASA has a CASA. A CASA volunteer can make a lasting impression in the life of an abused child. If you would like to help, please contact Texas CASA at (877-TX4-CASA). You can also support the CASA network in Texas by purchasing the

Around the State
When it is not safe for children to be with their own families, CPS petitions the court to remove the children from their homes. They may be placed temporarily with relatives, a verified foster family, or an emergency shelter. *In FY 2006, 67,737 children were confirmed as victims of child abuse or neglect in Texas. Of those, 46,246 children were in the custody of Child Protective Services. To report abuse or neglect, call the 24-hour hotline at 1-800-252-5400.
