The project, one of the club's two Fall fundraisers, started 6:45 AM on Saturday, October 3 at the Library at 13th and Heights Boulevard. A number of tables were set up on the library's front lawn and filled with books by the library staff. The sale items were collected during the year for this unique event. Heights Rotary sponsors it each Fall by helping to collect the books, CDs and DVDs and then acting, in shifts, as cashiers.
The funds are then contributed to the Heights Library for the underwriting of the children's summer reading program.
Buyers kept the cashiers busy until the sprinkling rain began after noon. Plastic sheets were quickly used to cover the tables. The cashiers moved onto the Library porch and sales continued. This year's receipts are the largest in the project's history. It is just one more example of Rotary's mottto of "Service Above Self" through its charitable contributions in the Heights, Houston and internationally.
