The "Common Ground" project
This week at the Rotary meeting we were given a presentation about an interesting program called Common Ground.
The program is an English in the workplace pilot program for businesses in rural Alberta and its focus is to help employers who have temporary foreign workers in their workplace set up a program that will help teach those workers English and our culture. This is could be a great thing for employers because currently the federal and provincial government do not provide funding for these workers to learn English.
|
| As it stands right now, businesses or the workers themselves have to hire somebody to help them understand the language and the culture they have temporarily stepped into. With this program employers will be supplied with a curriculum and training so they have the means to teach their staff the language and idioms that are specific to their workplace. This curriculum comes at no cost with the pilot project and once the project is approved all of the information will be available at the NorQuest College website at no cost.
Those interested in this program for their business are encouraged to contact Doug Parsons at douglas.parsons@norquest.ca or give him a call at 780-664-6773. |
