Rotary Board Meeting 06/21/2011

President Kurt Weigel called the board meeting to order.

Attendees were: Dennis McConnell, Keith Nelson, Sandra Ristow,

Tom Gooch, Kathleen Warren, John Brewer, Lou Ann Heroff, and Kurt Weigel.

Tom Gooch estimated that we are ending the year with about $10,000 in the treasury. The spaghetti feed brought in approximately $4,000. There will be an obligation to pay dues to Rotary Int’l and Rotary District 5080 after July 1.

The Pullman Arts Commission requested a donation for the installation of two murals by Patrick Siler, one of which would be placed on a wall at the Reaney Park Pool. The Board decided that we could not contribute to this cause.

Reports from Committees –

Membership – Kurt handed around a list of potential members that had been compiled by Chud Wendle and his committee members. We are all urged to ask persons on that list and others whether they would consider joining Rotary.

New Generations – Dennis McConnell said that he is willing to be the liaison for the Rotaract Club at the University, along with Chandi Bandaranayaka.

Community Service – Lou Ann said that she had nothing to report at this time but will talk to Mick Nazerali about future fundraising and service projects.

Kurt brought up details concerning our fund raiser at the Lentil Festival to be held on Aug. 19-20.  He said that the Chamber is definitely willing to work with us. The suggestion has been made that we sell $5 tickets which will be good for beer, wine, or a glass which bears the Rotary Logo.  Both Merry Cellars and the Wawawai Canyon wineries are willing to work with us. Our members will work both days of the festival at the tent which will feature both wine and beer. Chud will talk about our ideas for this concession with the Chamber.  Dennis McConnell has volunteered the use of tables and chairs from Gladish. Patrick Merry will furnish wine in stoppered oak kegs, and we will only have to pay for the wine that is used, thus eliminating wastage.

Kurt also described Mary Hoffman’s idea concerning sponsoring a fun run on September 17 or 24, both non-football weekends. Dennis McConnell told Mary that she should formulate the route for the run and notify the police department that we were planning the event.

Kurt is looking into a matching grant for his We Care Solar project (solar suitcases) which would fund small solar units used for power and lighting in rural villages for medical care.  Our club has made a contribution of $1,000 to fund such an apparatus. Kurt would like to expand the scope of this project that would help alleviate maternal death in third world countries, particularly in Africa. He is looking to include other clubs so that a pilot project status can be achieved. In addition, he would like to bring the level of the project up to at least $25,000 so it can be matched by a grant from the district or the Rotary Foundation.  The Rotary clubs in Nelson, BC and Richland, WA have expressed interest.

John Brewer and Kurt announced that we have achieved our objective for matching the Gates grant for PolioPlus, $2000 per year for three successive years.

There was a discussion concerning reminding the members of the club that they should contribute $100 per year to the Foundation.

Public Relations Committee – Kathleen Warren will put out publicity for the Lentil Festival activities as we come closer to the date of the event.  Dennis McConnell mentioned that the Gladish building now has a 50” TV near the front entrance on which announcements of local events can be displayed.

Club Service Committee – Debi Dockins asked for an extra $600 to send another student to RYLA. An extra RLYA scholarship was granted. There were no applications for the vocational scholarships.

Group Friendship Exchange – September 6, 7, 8 is coming soon! Dennis said that there has been no word from Colfax and the Moscow club has been fairly quiet with their involvement. There will be 6 couples from Britain involved.

Meeting adjourned at 6:30 PM.
