Adventures in Tourism - Perth, Australia
Editor: Cleland, Paul

Our club's most recently sponsored student to the Rotary Adventures in Tourism program at Perth, Western Australia was Jena Huber. She was in Australia from April 28 to May 19. She opened her presentation by thanking the club for this opportunity of a lifetime and thanked Mark Dixon for arranging the exchange. This was her first trip away alone.  She had an opportunity to meet with friends in Sydney from April 28th to May 5th and to tour that beautiful city. And then it was off to Perth for the AIT program. She met her host family, the Mannings, and they were wonderful. On her 1st day it was Family Day and she visited the Perth Zoo and saw kangaroos and other exotic animals. AIT is run by the Northbridge Rotary in Fremantle. One of her early visits was to The Old Brewery Restaurant and the old Fremantle Prison. It was built in the 1850s and closed in 1991 to become a tourism historic site and museum.

On day two she met with Motive Travel and the Western Australia Tourism Council and then she was taken to the Burswood Hotel and Casino Complex for a tour. Day three took her the Gingin Gravity Center, a science, educational and tourism facility. From there it was off to the Oceans Alive Ecocean Whale Shark Fundraiser where she learned all about these whale sharks. Later she enjoyed a very different melted chocolate drink.

Day four included a visit to the Central TAFE (Tertiary and Further Education) College where she took part in a tourism program course. Her next experience was participation in the "Two Feet and a Heart Beat" walking tour whose purpose is introduction to the sights, sounds and tales of the city's interesting history. Day five included Rottnest Island Preserve off the coast near Fremantle and here she had time to snorkle and visit the local lighthousoe. This was followed by a night tour of the Fremantle Prison and concluded her AIT week.

She was able to make her own arrangements for the following week in which she had the opportunity to visit with her friend and to visit a National Park where she saw kangaroos in the wild. The whole 22 day adventure provided Jena with an amazing set of experiences and again she thanked the club for allowing her to be there.

Jena was at Okanagan College last year where she earned her diploma in Hospitality and Tourism. She's returning to her home in Creston and then in the fall she hopes to find a position in the Kelowna tourism industry or possibly return to Australia for more experience.
