Tom joined the Civil Service of Canada in 1964 as a Customs Appraiser and then to the Foreign Service, where he was based initially in gay Paree doing trade mission management. He must have accomplished attention getting activities in Paris because, depending on your point of view, he was either reworded or punished with a 3 year posting to Kinshassa. There he did trade and consular duties in many central African states including Rwanda, Cameroon, Burundi the People's Republic of Congo. His last government duty, after his return to Canada, was as an Assistant to the then Minister of Industry, Trade and Commerce Alistair Gillespie.
Capitalizing on his African adventures, he joined Interimco Inc. as a partner, marketing Canadian technologies in Agriculture, Pipelines and Infrastructure Construction in Algeria and Morocco.
He returned to Calgary in1980, embarking on a career in publishing tourist related publications extolling the Calgary region. The list of publications that Tom either took over, launched, created, and nurtured take up a whole page in his resume and include:
Where - Canadian Rockies, Where Calgary
(including off shoots like Where Calgary Maps, Where Calgary Running Maps, Dining Guide, and Our Alberta magazine, His company, T2 Media Inc. created and launched Galleries West in '03 He is not only fluent in our other Official Language, but is computer literate beyond the hopes of most of us. Many younger readers may not even recall the Wang word processor, nor the 1st IBM PC,but Tom does. LAN, Quark, Adobe, Direct to Plate, building web sites and understanding what back-end data management means, are all terms and systems he works with at levels well beyond those readers born before the early baby boomer years. (It recalls one newer Club member exclaiming after thumbing through the old Rotary Song Book "I've never heard any of these songs") Tom's Volunteer activities at the 15th Olympic Winter Games ranged from the Foodservices Committee, through the Hosting Committee and being the Personal Host to Princess Nora of Liechtenstein during the Games He's been on the Management Advisory Committee (Tourism Management) at the U. of C. since 1992. He's a Past President of SKAL (ask him), he's on the Urban Development Committee Calgary Downtown, to name a few. Bill Gillotte introduced him to the Club in 1992. He has served as Chair of the Rotary Success Seminars and is a regular at BBQ events Tom is married to Sandra, and their son Alexandre holds a management position with RBC/Dominion Securities (who must be busy these days) |
