On Fridays we gather to fellowship with one another, we enjoy a lavish beakfast, we are favored with excellent presentations by guest speakers, we recite the Four-Way-Test and we head off with visions of enjoying a great weekend ahead.
This week as we prepare for our meeting, I challenge us to approach things a little differently. This Friday I encourage each member to ask themselves the following questions below:
-
What is Rotary?
-
Why Rotary?
-
What have I learned from being a Rotarian?
-
How have I benefited by being a Rotarian?
The answer to these questions will be unique to each individual. My hope is that by asking ourselves these questions, each of us will come away with a better realization of how our lives and the lives of others have benefited by our membership in this great organization. Below you can view videos that depict how some of our fellow Rotarians have answered these same questions. Be sure to use the "Back" arrow on your browser to exit the videos when complete!

Friday, January 29th, the Interact Club held its annual blood drive at MiltonHigh School. With the stricter rules this year and the shorter schedule the club was still able to sponsor a very successful blood drive. While 193 students showed up to donate, 136 students were accepted and were able to give a pint of blood. The Alpharetta Rotary Club donated cheese and crackers for the event.
In addition, the Club collected seven cases of canned goods as a contribution toward earthquake relief in Haiti. This was subsequently delivered to Fulton County Charities and the Alpharetta Rotary Club in turn donated equivalent funds for shelter boxes in Haiti.
The Interact Club is also raising funds, as they do every year, for their chosen International project in Columbia. They are raising money for an impoverished school in Barranquilla, Columbia. The "Por Amor A" school is a K-6 program and this year the Club is raising money for Kindergarten school supplies. While many of these students go without breakfast and even shoes, the Club is trying at the present time to raise money for such school supplies as: colored pencils, regular pencils, markers, crayons, erasers, rulers, pens, watercolor paints and play dough. They are working through Rotary Clubs in that area to secure heavier materials such as pads and notebooks. In future years they hope to raise money for desks and chairs. In the meantime, they are endeavoring to develop the contacts necessary to make their support direct and meaningful. School is just starting in that area as the seasons are of course reversed so the club hopes to send the supplies as soon as possible. Toward that end, if we can pass the hat at this coming Rotary meeting for hopefully a buck from each member, that will go a long way toward buying and shipping the planned materials. The members of the club have researched sources for the materials they planned to send.
The elected officers of the club plan to attend the District Interact meeting February 27th at RiverwoodHigh School. The Interact Club is an active and enthusiastic group with some 30 members and is very involved in the service programs of MiltonHigh School. During the blood drive over 20 students acted as hall monitors and promoters as well as serving in the small gymnasium to assist the Red Cross.

Hope for Guatemala (Esperanza Para Guatemala) is a non-profit Christian organization that seeks to help break the cycle of physical and spiritual poverty for children and their families of Zone 18 in Guatemala City, Guatemala. The area of Zone 18 is extremely impoverished and often very dangerous with significant gang activity. Many children will quit school by age 12 and repeat the lifestyle of their parents – taking low paying jobs, early pregnancy for teen girls, all of which often leads to drug and alcohol abuse to mask their despair and hopelessness.
Hope for Guatemala provides a nutritious lunch for the 180+ children each weekday along with daily Bible lessons and values of the week. HOPE also provides school supplies, tutoring and homework assistance, after school programs, soccer programs and medical clinics, as well as civic, social, and recreational activities to build strong character in this next generation. In addition to our direct work with the children, each family receives about 30 lbs. of fresh fruits and vegetables weekly. We believe the support we bring to this community will lead to a different outlook for the future of the children and their families--a future that is filled with hope and opportunity.
Brandon Christensen is Special Projects Coordinator with Hope for Guatemala. Brandon graduated from Florida State University in 1996 with a BS in Business Management, and after completion of his degree he went to work full-time with GE Healthcare as an Ultrasound Sales Representative. In 2007, Brandon took a leave of absence from GE, and he and his family moved to Guatemala City, Guatemala to serve as missionaries with Hope for Guatemala (www.hope4guatemala.org). They spent almost two years in Guatemala serving over 180 children and their families in a very dangerous area of Guatemala City. In July 2009, they returned to the US and moved to Columbia, South Carolina, where he continues his work with Hope for Guatemala and is currently enrolled at Columbia International University in the Seminary Program. Brandon also is a partner in a healthcare recruiting company, CY Executive Consultants. Brandon has been married to Shanna for 12 years, and has two daughters, Anna Grace 9 and Hallie 5.

One of the four Rotary Avenues of Service is International. The GRSP program provides a unique opportunity for all of our club members to be part of our international service.
Since 1946, Rotarians in Georgia, USA, have promoted world peace through understanding by offering scholarships to international students for one year of study in Georgia colleges and universities. Georgia Rotary Clubs sponsor students recommended by a Rotary Club in their home country. The students become adopted members of a Georgia "host family," but live on-campus at the school they attend.
Our GRSP Student - Alice Overton-Lamb - is one of 66 international students in the GRSP class of 2090-2010. Her other classmates come from South America, Central America, Europe, China and other exotic locations including Fiji, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe. Alice is one of two students from England. Alice's host families are William and Jan Perkins and Eric and Megan Douglas. Alice will be our program this Friday morning.
Our club will be co-hosting a GRSP Student weekend with the Sandy Springs Rotary Club on November 13-15. There are a number of opportunities to become involved in this weekend:
· Host a few students stay in your home Friday night,
· Accompany the student on their day in Atlanta on Saturday
· Participate in the Saturday evening at the YMCA as part of the student lock-in
· Participate in the Sunday morning breakfast and send off at the YMCA This is a great opportunity to interact with these very special students from the far reaches of the word. Please see Wayne Robinson for more information.

Alpharetta on the Run
Committee members Ben Easterling, Kathy Marko, Gayle Battersby and Janet Rodgers
Last Saturday morning, Rotarians and runners gathered at Wills Park for the 13th annual Mayor's Challenge. Runners, both young and old, ran the 5k and 10k race through the streets of Alpharetta. Rotarians volunteered to sign up the runners, set up the food and water stations, direct the runners on the course, and help record their times. Mayor Letchas started the race and handed out the winner's plaques. The Original House of Pancakes once again provided a great breakfast to the hungry runners.
This year, we raffled a vacation travel package as part of the fund raiser, and for the second time this year, Buddy Lollis won the raffle (Buddy also won the car raffle at FunFest). Congratulations Buddy!
Thanks to Ben Easterling for once again steering his committee to yet another successful Mayor's Challenge.

South Korea Meets Alpharetta
South Korean GSE Team with Mayor Letchas at City Hall
The Alpharetta Rotary Club had the privilege of hosting the GSE Team from South Korea from April 9th to 12th. The Alpharetta Club, and our co-hosts from the North Atlanta Rotary Club, showed the GSE Team members some southern hospitality. The busy weekend included visiting Bulloch Hall in Roswell, met with Mayor Letchas, ate barbeque at Smokejack, visited the Carter Center, attended the Braves home opener, and went to the Atlanta Zoo. Saturday afternoon the GSE team went shopping at Lenox Mall and that evening we had a cook out at Sam Gordon's house.
Special thanks to Mike Hart for organizing the weekend, William Perkins for chaperoning on Saturday, and the Gordon, Hipes and Weeber families for hosting our guests.
