Friday – October 30, 2009   All Hallows Eve-Eve
(I know it will all be history when you read this…but this scribe is in the moment!)

One witch told another witch, "I want one of those new computers that has a spell checker."

The air horn is back….and President Greg with it! (Were you gone?)

Dan Livingston
led the club in a moment of silence in honor of the fallen soldiers killed in Iraq and Afghanistan.  We were guided in the pledge to our flag by Duncan Cook.

Other Rotarians helping out were Ron Irwin on Fall Raffle Tickets, Bill Young as Sergeant at Arms and the Weekly Raffle, and Mick Johnson at the Paul Harris table …. thanks, guys!

We opened in an irregular manner. President Greg Horn was off somewhere, and PP Rick Selden was standing in. Terry Fung, however, recruited Morris Northcutt to enliven things a bit, and PP Rick was sent to the back of the room. The magic hour of 12:30 was nigh, and in the nick of time interloper Fung gaveled the bell. As PP Rick worked his way forward, Fung and Northcutt tried to "bring him on" in gala fashion. Nice try, guys. PP Rick is a nice guy, but nobody tuned in to this "runway" entry.

The crew of usual suspects did their customary work behind the scenes. Jason Whalen offered the invocation, and Donya Martin led us in the Pledge. Bill Young staffed the Sgt at Arms office and Gary Fulton covered the Paul Harris Desk. Ron Adkins composed this week's bulletin.

It was not a bell.  It was not an airhorn.  It was not "hey, you guys, quiet down!"  It was none of these, but rather the sweet tones of Morris "The Bugler" Northcutt, issuing forth the crystal clear tones of "First Call", also known as "The Call to the Post".  And with that, our President led us off to the races, so to speak.  It was indeed a busy day, and Gregory Horn had his hands full fitting it all in.  And they're off!!!

The Men in Pink took over the October 9 meeting of the Rotary Club of Lakewood and obviously the color got to President Greg Horn's head because he was nearly five minutes late hitting the bell to start the meeting.

"This is the first meeting of the second quarter of my year as president," he reminded everyone as if none of us could recall such important data.

This oration was followed by Clint Johnson presenting an eloquent invocation and Dr. Jim Rooks leading us in the salute to our flag. Others assisting with the meeting were: Bill Young, sergeant-at-arms, Mick Johnson, Paul Harris desk; and Dave Sclair, bulletin writer.

Two score and 13 years ago, our Lakewood Rotary fathers brought forth on this city a new service club, conceived with fellowship and good humor, and dedicated to the proposition that all men are created equal, and even Greg Horn can be president.  And a dandy one he is, too, especially when he doesn't blow the air horn to start the meeting.    Dan Livingston started things with another excellent invocation, while Terry Fung led us in the Pledge.  Other assistance to President Horn was provided by Gary Fulton at the Paul Harris funds acquisition counter, Bill Price served as Sgt at Arms and didn't even need a sidearm to do the job, while Jim Skar introduced the visiting Rotarians: Jeff Elberth from Tacoma 8, Charlie Neu from Port Townsend, and Ray Fraely from Clover Park.  There is the minor possibility that I spelled a name or two wrong, like 98%.   More...

Dear Fellow Lakewood Rotarians:
If you were at the meeting on Friday, you will know because you can no longer hear after President Hornblower sounded the outside air horn in the dining room both to start and end the meeting. Additionally, he hit the bell with the gavel a couple of times. City Manager Andrew Neiditz noted that several local noise ordinances had been violated, but it appeared none of Lakewood's finest was in attendance to run the perpetrator in!
Whew, narrow escape, President Greg Nukinukihuihuihaha II!

And so…another meeting of the historic and exclusive Lakewood Rotary began!

SO, THIS IS ROTARY?

LIVE, from the Tacoma Country & Golf Club, it's Name That Tune!  No, Name The Singer  …… No, it's Friday noon, we are at the Tacoma Country & Golf Club - it must be another chapter in the eventual impeachment trial of President Greg Horn!  Was that a new suit he was wearing?  Not surprising when you found out he had invited his wife of 33 years, Mary, to be his guest.
12:30pm,  King Greg II grabbed the mic, brought us to order and commented on how much he enjoyed playing before "another packed house".
Dave Coleman gave the invocation and mentioned special thanks for all those Rotarians that work with the youth of our community:  Dan Livingston of Youth for Christ proudly has announced the new opening of the $1.6 mil Tillicum Youth and Family Center, the ongoing work by David Pritchard with Young Life and Judy Hosea with the Boys & Girls Club.   Pres-Elect Mick Johnson led us in the Pledge of Allegiance.  Helping today to make the meeting happen:  Duncan Cook (setup), Bill Young (Sgt at Arms), Mike McGowan (Paul Harris desk) and Dave Covey (Bulletin).

President Greg Horn rang the bell at about 12:30 to begin the September 11th, 2009 fifth meeting of the Rotary Club of Lakewood. I only say at about 12:30 because I am not sure my Tommy Bahama Rolax watch keeps the best time.

Meeting assistants
Joe Quinn
gave an invocation that included a request for protection for the law enforcement, fire fighter, and military service members of our nation. The pledge to our flag was led by our speaker Howard Hunter. A call to the lobby brought our Sergeant-at-arms Mary Lou Sclair with the list of visiting Rotarians: Ed Trobraugh, Bob Edington, President Elect Georgene Mellom, and President Deanna Ebsen from Clover Park Rotary. Also visiting was John Anderson from Sumner Rotary, our current assistant district governor.

12:30 brought a pleasant "ding!"  Does anyone remember the Horn horn?  Do they miss it?

12:31 and Dr. Jim Early offered today's invocation, followed by PP Joel Feldman's leading the Pledge of Allegiance.

Zipping right along Bill Price was named as Sgt at Arms, PP Cindy Thompson as staffing the Paul Harris Desk, and Ron Adkins was identified as today's bulletin writer.   More...

President Gregory I blew the horn to restore order at roughly 12:30 p.m.

Providing Assistance

He called upon Morris Northcutt for the Invocation and our speaker, Jim Mapes, to lead us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our Flag.

The Prez recognized Ward Fletcher serving at the Paul Harris Desk and  Bill Young as the Sergeant at Arms.

Joe Quinn is writing this bulletin so any mistakes are attributed solely to Joe.

President Greg opened the meeting at the urging of the "table of wisdom" noting the time with emphatic finger pointing at their watches. If only the mike was working!

Able Assistants

Once resolved, he announced that Ron Adkins worked the entry table in promotion of the upcoming HOMEBREW Festival, while 13-14 or 15-times Paul Harris Fellow, Ward Fletcher collected contributions for the RI Foundation.  (This substitute scribe would like to see the Lakewood Foundation also collect weekly contributions toward a local "Fellow of the Lakes" ….and would be the first to sign up!)  (Such are the powers of the press!)

That left pushing the sale of the weekly raffle tickets to the capable Past President, Mary Lou Sclair. The invocation was led by Dan Livingston and the pledge by Larry Faulk.

Six meetings into the regime of President Greg Horn, things seem to be moving quite smoothly, at least in numerous arenas of the Rotary Club of Lakewood.
As usual, the supreme leader called the meeting to order exactly at half past the noon hour. Fortunately for all in the room and the remainder of Tacoma Country & Golf Club, Pres. Greg simply struck the gong with  a moderate swing rather than his occasional race horns or other sound devices.

Sound the Horn!  The Greg- Horn!  Meeting #5 and no impeachment proceedings begun as of this date.  Clearly, an unqualified success.  Actually, the Puffins are chomping at the bit to get to the Roast in December: All these stories circulating about Greg's colorful past have them salivating at the comedic possibilities......But that is for another day, and this day, King Alii Gregoipoi Ekolu, aka President Greg, opened the meeting relatively quietly, calling upon Father Clint Johnson for the Invocation, and speaker David Snow led us in the Pledge.   More...

You know, when it comes right down to it we must admit that President Greg Horn(e) is catching on to his role quickly.  He called us to order at 12:31 without the benefit of a starter's horn, just a simple tap on the bell.  With as close to zero "ado" as possible, he pressed "red badge" Kismet Kechejian into service to provide today's invocation,  followed by Lorna Gifford's leading us in the Pledge, and she is not yet even a "Puffin."  "Involve 'em early, by golly."

"Welcome to the FASTEST Half Hour in Lakewood!"

This was the opening quote by our President Greg II after having just 2 meetings under his belt!  Perhaps it was a direct result from last week's performance:  either a 40+minute meeting then short program or just a double scheduled program……… but we were movin' FAST & Low Level!  Fasten your safety belts, Sound the Horn, this year is going to be FUN(by the order of our Dist Gov Alex).

Wow! Maybe it was just me, because I had to write it all down, but we certainly had a full meeting agenda today. Guests, visitors; announcements; birthdays and anniversaries; confessions of gas; you name it and we had it.
The July 17, 2009 meeting started three minutes late, but made up for that by going long. PresidentGreg Horn sounded the bell at 12:33. Ron Adkins read the invocation followed by Michael McGovern leading us in the pledge to our flag.

At 12:27 pm on Friday, July 10th, we received an alert that a new regime was afloat. President Greg Horn sounded a 3-minute warning horn, and the boaters on American Lake joined us in taking notice. The race, such as it was, would begin in moments. Those in the galley who were not adjusting hearing aids heard the explanation for the blast; others caught on as a DVD of power boats skimming over the water's surface came up on the screen. Order was more or less restored as all hands scrambled to get on deck for the launch signaled by the 12:30 bell.

Carl Fynboe offered the invocation after a lengthy recitation of the innumerable graduates of Clover Park and Lakes High Schools, most of whom seemed unaware that this was an early kickoff to the possible class reunions of 45 and 47 years ago. Need it be said that Carl was a ranking officer in the CPSC at the time? PDG Gordon Quick, with a different fanfare to follow, led us in the pledge to the flag. And what followed? Those traditional symbols of office, choice zucchini and cherries, from the garden of said Mr. Gordon. (Oh, yes! There was that matter of the Past President's pin.)

PRESIDING:  Joel Feldman opened up his very last meeting as President of Lakewood Rotary by reminding us that the Rotary Club of Lakewood has been serving this community for 53 years and….whatever.  The Club responded with an ovation to honor his service in his year as President, or because they were so relieved that the end is near.  Joel was the one who pointed out that it was not clear which it was.  And keep 'yer opinions to 'yerself.  Thanks Joel for making the sacrifices that we know were asked of you.

PLEDGE:  Joe Quinn led us in the Pledge to our Flag, and wrote this Bulletin.

With only one more meeting left in his reign, President Joel Feldman called the meeting to order at 12:30 pm at Tacoma Country & Golf Club. He proudly pointed out that the club has been serving the community for 53 years and months (I missed the exact number).

In this next to the finale, President Joel inducted one new member, about which more will be said later.

Assisting with the meeting
Bob Peterson presented the invocation and Mick Johnson led the salute to our flag. Mary Lou Sclair served as sergeant-at-arms, Cindy Thompson was at the Paul Harris Desk and Dave Sclair did the bulletin in place of John Magnuson, who is being held captive on a Pacific Island.

As Rosana Roseannadana once said on Saturday Night Live, "It's always something, ya know!" A projector was needed for the meeting and getting there early to set up doesn't always provide the results wanted when there's no computer! Thank heaven for our program speaker, Melissa Covelli Derry, who had a laptop we could use. Notice the Covelli insert, we'll get back to that later, but from now on, can Lakewood Rotary plan enough to have an audio / video committee / film squad - or something? - Ya know?
President Joel Feldman had Richard Simmons up front to test the microphone. The test proved successful so we were called to order by Joel (not Richard). Lakewood Rotary has been serving our community for 53 years and 3 months.
Behind the scenes to make the meeting run like clockwork were: Jim Shultz - Paul Harris Desk; Jay Mayer - Sgt at Arms; Dave Covey – Bulletin; Carl Fynboe – Invocation; and Walt Richardson - Flag Salute.

Six meetings to go for the glorious reign of King Joel, and at 12:33 pm on May 22, a hush went over the crowd.  Could this be the meeting when the sound system would begin at the same time as Joel?!?  Moments later, the high hopes of the assembled Rotarians and friends were dashed like a Brandon Morrow fastball flying over the fence in the 12th inning.  But there are still five more meetings left..Not that there wasn't plenty of help from the peanut gallery to help with the sound situation, or lack thereof: "Plug it in!"  "Turn it on!"  Who'd have thought that we had so many sound engineering experts in our midst.

The invocation was by Bob Peterson. Bud Montgomery led us the pledge to our flag. Bill Young introduced the visiting Rotarian; John Anderson from Sumner. Mick Johnson staffed the Paul Harris desk today. Bill Young was Sergeant-at-Arms. There was no Jan Luze and no sunshine report. Guest of Rotarians: Gayle Selden introduced her traveling partner mom Sharon and her cousin Jamie Garrett. Bud Montgomery introduced his daughter, and our speaker, Melissa, as his guest.

"Hutta, hutta, hutta!" pronounced President Joel Feldman; or at least, that's what I thought I heard as the microphone wasn't working right away, which I think translated from Swedish into "MickJohnson will start things with the Invocation".  Of course, everything in Swedish goes "hutta, hutta, hutta," according to our resident Swedish language expert, Ole Magnuson.  I think that explains the demise of the Swedish empire, this general lack of vocabulary.  Not to mention the cancellation of The Muppet Show.

SPORTSMAN'S DINNER "PREVIEW" MEETING

    President Joel Feldman
(who?) - I say again, direct from the sometimes rainy shores of Hawaii, our President Joel Feldman, called us to order.  His non-tanned face told us his resort vacation package must have included a discount to remain in the shade.  King Joel reminded us that Lakewood Rotary has been serving the community for 52 years & 11 months.  Which means arithmetically this could be our 2,752nd meeting....but between holiday cancellations, snow storms, scheduling conflicts and an occasional case of apathy....it's not!
Sensing priorities this week, your editor has dispensed with the normal order of the bulletin and decided to get on with the REALLY  IMPORTANT  STUFF!

Past President John Magnuson looked around the podium; Thor's Hammer, a Viking battle-axe, even a shillelagh left over from the St. Patrick's Day meeting; he desperately sought out anything with which to ring the bell and open the meeting at 12:30. A kind guest from the audience presented him with a table knife, sans beef and gravy I presume, and we began.

PP John made a note that Torvald and Sven were seen in the area and related what he overheard from their conversation as they fished on the lake below. Torvald told Sven that he was thinking about leaving his wife because she hadn't said a single word to him in three months. Sven cautioned Torvald that he should think very carefully on that decision: a good woman like that is very hard to find.

Norwegians were seen shaking in their muddy little boots.

Stadium High School student Lauren O'Eklund played Irish songs on the lovely harp during fellowship. Personally I thought I was at the Pearly Gates and I was a'hearin' some angel a'playin' my song!

"All Good Things Come to Those Who Wait"

...so said Henry Wadsworth Longfellow in his poem A Student's Tale. And wait we did, at Rotary on Friday last. It may have seemed an eternity but it was really only 12:31 when we were called to attention. Was it a "...good thing..." all that ensued? You be the judge. President Joel declared Lakewood Rotary as 52 years and 10 or 11 months young and still going strong.

The invocation was offered by PP Scott Buser and Pledge to the Flag of The United States by PP Joe Quinn.

Ward Fletcher manned the Paul Harris desk and Morris Northcutt and PP Mary Lou Sclair manned and womaned the Sportsman's Dinner and Auction desk. PP John Magnuson is your poet for the week. Lakewood Rotarians were recently introduced to the Swedish language by Ole Magnuson.  Nothing good has come from that, and nothing good could ever come from that.  Last week, Lakewood Rotarians were given a lesson in "blackberry" by Judy Hosea.  This might possibly be more useful than Swedish, which is used mostly by goat herders and herring lovers, but I don't recall seeing too many Rotarians fatigued by extensive texting, so I'm thinking it too will prove to be generally ignored.     More...

The President gets to keep his Blackberry! This was the equivalent of "the shot heard round the world" to Generation X-Y and Z'ers. Many tech-savvy citizens in the country "high-fived" or shouted YES out their windows, while some of the more technology-challenged members of Lakewood Rotary wondered why all the fuss about fruit?

President Bob Zawiliski, king of the PowerPoint, introduced technology as a regular part of his weekly meeting agenda.  For a year, we were entertained with a plethora of Rotary factoids broadcast on the big screen. It was not without its challenges as Bob, a "wanna-be geek" struggled with his operating system. But, every journey begins with a first step.

President Joel is a self-admitting "John McCainish" technology challenged Rotarian. But, in the spirit of "you are never too old to learn a thing or two", we take another step today, in celebration of President's Day, to introduce all Lakewood Rotarians to the world of text messaging. After all, if the President has a Blackberry, we all had better be prepared to answer if he texts!

Instructions: Normal recap will appear in local dialect, followed by a text version summary or comment. For example:

12:30PM ... (check)  Tacoma Country and Golf Club. (check)  "Ding." (check)  [Indistinct shouts and murmurs.]

Pause with me, Ron Adkins, the substitute recordist for this week's fun and frolic, to consider a matter of very little substance and, probably, no real importance. Did you notice that PE Greg Horn, substitute presiding officer, introduced what might be seen as a disturbing innovation? As those who regularly join in this congregation are aware, we are working our way up to a virtual tradition of trying to embarrass our presiding officer by engineering uncertainty in the use of the sound system. PE Greg seems to be on to this, so after the obligatory calls back and forth along the lines of: "Turn it on."  "No." "Yes." "Hold the mike closer," PE Greg switched to an alternate audio system. Okay, so PE Greg has affiliated with Toastmasters to sharpen his public skills, but are we going to allow him to bring his personal audio system from home? If this continues, will we know what to say and do once the bell rings? Just how will we continue our efforts to keep our presiding officers humble? Perhaps we should pass this issue along to the committee of Past Presidents for their consideration and recommendations.

Well, order was restored, and we moved ahead anyway. Acknowledgements were made to the following for their service today: Bill Young, as Sgt at Arms, and Jim Schultz for staffing the Paul Harris Desk. Clint Johnson offered the invocation, and Ron Adkins led the Pledge. Tracye Kakely (and welcome back, Trayce) oversaw the introduction of visiting Rotarians and the many guests. With apologies to our visitors, the Rotarians included Tom McCleland, Charlie Maxwell, and Nick Sumich of the Clover Park Club, Bert Stibbe (and his wife) from Sumner, and Larry Treleven and Don Anderson of Tacoma&   More...

There were choices as you made your way down Country Club Drive: attend Rotary or attend an Estate Sale. I think I might have spotted a couple in the crowd that seemed confused by the commute and wanted to make an offer on a well-seasoned gavel or sporadically functional PA system.

The bell was rung at 12:30 by President Joel Feldman to open the meeting. President Joel spoke to Richard Simmons immediately about yelling at him to get things started on time. Richard said he didn't yell, but simply pointed at his watch right at 12:30. Maybe Richard likes things to be prompt or maybe he just wanted to point out a new watch.

We got a "1, 2" microphone check from the President and that most likely cemented any conflicted Estate Sale attendee into not making any offers on that item. A Presidential announcement that this Rotary meeting marks the 32nd year and 9th month of service, met by numerous gallery corrections to it being the 52nd year and 9th month, probably iced anyone else thinking Estate Sale offering any money for the gavel now too.

At 12:30 pm, Acting President Mike Turner, in great future President fashion, hammered the bell to launch us into a meeting which, in part, commemorated our service to the community over the last (what was it?) 52 years, 8 months, 2 weeks and 22 minutes. If this calculation is faulty, consider two factors:  one of my hearing aids is in the shop, and I'm unsure how we've accounted for Leap Years. Be that as it may, the long-awaited "Tom and Jerry" festivity was already underway, and we had a packed house to the delayed roasting of our most esteemed and honorable President Joel Feldman.

PP Greg Rediske
read an invocation written by Carl Fynboe. This particular "blessing" may not have passed muster in any known seminary, but we hope the good Lord got as much a chuckle as did the audience. And where was Carl anyway? Was he back in the other Washington to join the inauguration ceremonies with John Korsmo, head of the Puffin unit and mentioned often in his absence?

Newest Puffin Wynn Hoffman led us in the Pledge, one of the few activities of the day that wasn't intentionally or unintentionally screwed up.

A bunch of people were in service to the Club today. In some of the more typical posts are/were:

    Paul Harris Desk        Bill Young
Sgt at Arms        Bill Price, Greg Horn, Terry Fung
Sunshine        Jan Luze (who had no report)
    Bulletin            Ron Adkins

President Joel Feldman kicked off the first meeting of the new year in his usual fashion at the Clover Park Technical College Rotunda:  he reminded us of our long tradition of serving Lakewood and the world, as Rotarians.

Carl Fynboe provided the Invocation, by quoting from Mo Sarram's new book, Transplanted, which is the story of a man who has lived an unusual life as a Muslim and an Iranian, but also has lived the American Dream.

Don Anderson, Lakewood City Councilman and Tacoma 8 member, led us in the Pledge of Allegiance to our flag.

Bill Young served as the Sergeant at Arms, Joe Quinn was Bulletin writer and Jim Schultz handled the Paul Harris Desk.

A nearly packed house was on hand at Tacoma Country & Golf Club for the weekly meeting of Lakewood Rotary Club. Sure enough, at 12:30 pm President Joel Feldman stepped to the rostrum and struck the bell calling the meeting to some semblance of order.

The invocation was ably handled by Bob Gee followed by Joe Quinn leading us in the pledge to the flag.
